Description: When the newly built Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery opened it doors on August 4th, 2001 in Shipshewana, the entire town was invited over for dinner. As one of Indiana's largest restaurants, the Blue Gate comfortably seats 600 (more than the town's population). Built to reflect the surrounding community, the Blue Gate resembles a rambling white farmhouse, similar to those that dot the surrounding Amish coutnryside. An award winning restaurant serving a world famous Family-style meal that features pressure fried chicken and 3 other meats, real mashed potatoes, Amish noodles, plus lots of other sides and 25 varieties of pies to choose from

Service was pleasant, food was excellent, restaurant was clean. Only problem we had was a tap dancer practicing right above the dining room all during dinner! It was constant pounding through the ceiling. The manager was nice when explaining what the noise was, but it was still bothersome. You would think they could schedule his practice outside of peak dinner hours! Women's rest rooms were in need of attention. Not terrible, but toilets were not flushed, spills etc.

We had lunch, meatloaf and liver and onions. Their apple butter was the best and we got a quart to take home. Plenty of food, enough for leftovers. Friendly servers and very helpful.

The handful of times I have eaten here I have always left wondering why everyone talks so highly of the place. To me the food was just average tasting not spectacular enough to make me think "I need to come back & eat here again in the future" & also, it seemed over priced for what you get. The place is obviously aimed at the tourist crowd looking to experience Amish style cooking. And it packs them in for sure as you usually need to sign in and wait for your name to be called as they are usually that packed. On my last such occasion, Subway across the street began to feel like it made much more sense to me. But beef & noodles with mashed potatoes-n-gravy isent offered at Subway yet.
