“Shhhh! I found a secret!”
Reviewed September 1, 2008

My wife and I just stopped in to see the quaint shop, restaurant, and possibly stay if all seemed "right" for us. We were on the way to Owensboro and we had plenty of sightseeing & tourist time. We were impressed with the warm & genuinely friendly reception from the staff, dining area with a view of a stocked pond. Bring a loaf of bread and watch the biggest channel catfish put on a show the likes of JAWS, We had the place to ourself except for one other room's occupants whom we never saw. I thought that this place would have the little children all over...it was made for that! But we "big kids" enjoyed a very reasonably priced stay and the pool and hot tub to ourselves. I will go back if just for the chicken soup. (NOT from a can for sure.) We got up early and walked through the town. There were wild deer at several places along our way. (Not reign deer, but you don't need to tell the kiddies that they arn't) I am sure that the holiday atmosphere increases closer to the Christmas season, but we will go back anytime. I just think that we benifited from the "back to school" days that allowed us to get special attention and service that everyone likes to get. The secret is two words..."Off Season."

Santa's Lodge is a nice place that is great for families going to Holiday World and Splashin' Safari. The employees were all very friendly. We stayed for two nights in the newer side of the hotel. Everything was very clean. They have a nice indoor and outdoor pool, and a hot tub inside. Only one complaint...We paid $109.xx plus fees for our Saturday night stay - I thought this was a little high for a middle of the line hotel room, but it is within sight of Holiday World. All other hotels are several miles away.

For breakfast we ate at the hotel restaraunt, St. Nick's. The breakfast buffet was $8.95 and did not include drinks! That was the adult price for anyone 9 years of age or older. Our total for breakfast (for 4 people) came to $46 with drinks and tip. OUCH!

For dinner we headed over to Frosty's on Santa's Lodge property. The "arcade" that they mention is actually just 6-8 video games in the corner of the building. They have many menu items, but are VERY high priced and slow to come out. The fryer that they used was something you would see in a home kitchen...and only cooked one serving of fries or chicken strips at a time. This meant the rest of the food was sitting on a table in the middle of the kitchen getting cold while each serving of fried food was cooked. A huge disappointment is what Frosy's was.

If you're traveling here to go to Holiday World and Splashin' Safari...eat at the park - it is very affordable there!

  • Liked — It was very close to Holiday World and Splashin' Safari parks.
  • Disliked — The dining options were limited. The pricing seemed high for what this hotel really is...

I am a local person who has booked reservations for friends. I noticed the reviews at this site are two and three years old and need to be updated. Many things have changed as the Lodge has grown. I have found the food to be good and the prices reasonable. My friends have not complained about the rooms being overpriced. I checked and during the busy season they run about $70 for a standard room. In the off season they are around $50 for a standard room. This is no different from anywhere else we travel when we go on vacation that is a similar tourist destination. Our town sees one million visitors each summer, but reverts back to a small town of around 2500 when Holiday World is closed. There are many neat things to do and see in addition to Holiday World. Please be kind and you will see kindness in return.

Our family stayed at Santa's Lodge for two days in the middle of July. We found the property to be a relaxed atmosphere that is geared to the family. We will stay here again next time we visit.

The check in process was a little slow but the attendant was friendly enough. Beware though, Santa's Lodge does not have rollaway beds nor do they have a couch or love seat in the rooms. If you have a 5th person, you will need to be creative to find a spot for them to sleep in.

We checked in around 2:00 in the afternoon and found the hallways clean (by the next morning they were a little worse for the wear). Our room was a decent size and very clean. We had two queen beds on the second floor. The bathroom was tiny - just enough room for a toilet and a tub. The sink is outside the room.

Our first stop was the outdoor pool. We didn't check a property map first and it took a while for us to find it. The pool is across the yard and a small access road from the lodge building. It was bigger than I was expecting. There were a limited number of chairs available and no shade umbrellas. It was not crowded when we were there (about 4:00) so chairs were not a problem. The depth was 3.0 ft-5.5 ft. We did not use the indoor pool, but it appeared to be on the small side.

We ate at the buffet one night and the service was pleasant and attentive. This is a very modest buffet with average food. The convenience was unbeatable so I was not bothered by the price or the quality of the food.

We did not eat the breakfast buffet, but instead opted for donuts, juice and fruit purchased at the grocery store right across the street. It was then off to Holiday World which is about two long city blocks away.

While we were gone housekeeping did a fair job cleaning the room. There was a dirty washcloth left on the bathroom floor behind the door. They did not replenish our soap or shampoo, which we needed, nor the disposable coffee cups. Had to make a trip to the front desk to get more. But the beds were made and the room was vacuumed.

In my opinion, if you are traveling here with a family of young kids or teens you will feel entirely comfortable with the freedom, noise levels and general atmosphere around the property. If you like your hotels to be impeccable in their cleanliness and amenities, you might try looking somewhere else.

  • Liked — The pool and the proximity to Holiday World.
  • Disliked — Housekeeping did not do a thorough job.

We had problems from initial check-in on July 4, starting at the registration desk when the desk clerk rather disturbed because us wanting to use a VISA instead of my AMEX card used to book our room. The desk clerk indicated she was pressed for time and was going to have to make a change that normally would have been fine had she not had to change. The time she spent telling us that she was going to be late leaving, the transaction might have been completed with a smile. The night of July 5, we actually arrived from our family reunion at 1:00am and found that we were locked out of our room. After going to the front desk, we had apparently been checked out of our room and our room assigned to another guest, yet all our belongings were in the room. The reason given was the fact that we had not shown up early so they considered that we had left the lodge. After clearing things up we were allowed into our room and found that the desk lamp was gone from the room. A used towel was still behind the bathroom door and the shampoo has not been replaced. On July 6, we arrived and the coffee cups left in the room from our morning coffee were still sitting in the room, shampoo had still not been replaced and the desk lamp was back in the room. My wife went to the front desk to inquire about shampoo and told they were out but they had conditioner. Based on our experience, I would tell folks to be cautious and make sure you look at the room surroundings before leaving and upon arrival.

This is a very nice small hotel with a really friendly staff and a great facility. We have stayed several times in the last 5 years, and have never had a complaint. One time there was a long line of fellow coaster fans waiting to check in, and the manager came out to chat with us and just spent some time chatting. Can't ask for better service than that.

The only minor complaint is that the halls can be a little noisy, but even then it's nothing terrible.

We've been staying at Santa's Lodge during our Holiday World vacations since 2004. Apparently we've been lucky in that we always seem to get the rooms in the new end of the hotel. The rooms are clean, beds linens and pillows are also clean. The front desk could use some modernization on their resevation system though. I made a reservation back in March for June 8-10. We arrived and proceeded to check in and there was much digging through some paperwork behind the desk to find the print out with my reservation. I'm thinking "Please don't let this get screwed up..". Finally found my reservation, irritability level down to normal. These guys really need to update their system. Overall I like the Inn for its proximity to Holiday World as well as its cleanliness. The "buffet" downstairs is another matter.

The buffet has always been somewhat pricey. After shelling out $8.95 a head for breakfast on the first day that was all she wrote. This didn't even include drinks. The food was less than outstanding. The sausage patties were like hockey pucks and the scrambled eggs rubber. I've had better food at truck stop buffets for $2.00 a plate less. For $8.95 they should have a chef on duty fixing made to order omlettes. Also, no fruit on the buffet. Their "remodeling job" seemed like it was on hold. Where they had a nice open air dining area, they now have a half finished open air addition. With $4.00 a gallon gas I felt like we were getting a hosing from this buffet on top of everything else. We actually planned the rest of our meals at Holiday World. You can get a really decent meal back in the Thanksgiving section for around $8.00 a plate and not have to worry about getting held up for your drinks. This place does need some real competition.
Long story short, the Inn is a good place to stay just make your dining plans elsewhere. If you're coming in off of US 41, check out Stoll's Amish Buffet located on the south side of I-64. They run about $11.95 a head plus drinks, but the food is far better than the Inn's plus they have a greater selection. Kids 12 and under are $5.55. The Inn charges full price for kids over 5. The Inn "buffet" needs to take some lessons from its neighbor in terms of giving its customers a fair deal.
