“What a trip”

My husband and I just returned from spending our anniversary in New Harmony, IN and staying at the quirky Old Rooming House. As other reviewers have said, it is not for everyone. If you are looking for cookie cutter chain hotel rooms, TV, phone and wi-fi this would not be the place for you. If you are looking for an interesting experience, a clean comfortable bed and all the childhood memories your eyes can take in, then this just might be the place for you. Add to the mix a very accommodating host with stories to share and helpful tips on the town and you can expect to enjoy your stay. From your name on the outside chalk board, to hand written receipts - it is not what you would expect or get at the Holiday Inn.

I'm smiling as I write this review, because it's hard to describe this place. Stayed with my brother one night in Room 4. Feels like you're in an old attic room at your grandma's home, and she's too old to get up the stairs to sweep away the cobwebs, but left some toys for you to play with that she placed there years ago. The linens, bath etc were clean though. Beds were creaky, but comfortable for one person. There were a few potential hazards from the low ceiling & step up into the bathroom. This room is not recommended for people over 5'8" as you won't be able to get your head under the shower nozzle. We loved the casual, hands off, but very friendly management, and LOVED the bikes on the porch that you can take anywhere, anytime & return when you are done. What a lovely town to ride around in - highly recommend taking the bikes everywhere you go in town. The price is right - I'd recommend the Rooming House only for someone who is adventurous, and open to different experiences.

Room Tip: Room 4 - good for two travelers who need separate beds. No one over 5'8", and not for a ha...

We've stayed several times at the Old Rooming House. This time we took my mom and sisters and spent the night for the Christmas festival. When we drove by the house to go around back and park, I said casually, "There's our place," and my sister thought I was kidding! My mom saw her room and burst out laughing. It's definitely old, eccentric, and suited best for those who have a sense of humor and an open mind. But also, it's clean, warm and cozy. We took all the rooms, and had a grand time. Also, there are several old, well-kept bicycles, including a tandem, that you are free to use, which is a real bonus. New Harmony is a terrific bicycling town.

Not wanting to stay in a traditional hotel whilst visiting New Harmony, a girlfriend and I opted to stay at The Old Rooming Inn. When speaking to the owner by telephone, he had no pretensions about the place and he was right. He seemed a delightful fellow, never saw him but spoke a couple or so times. Payment is on the honour system (cheque/cash). The outside looked worse than the inside...it is an old house, in need of some exterior beautification. The room we had was clean, comfy beds with eclectic furniture, There was an AC which worked wonderfully well. There are few amenities...coffee /tea in the front hall way but you get what you pay for and the price was right. We felt that it was a positive experience and something that we will remember more than if we had stayed at the inn in town. For some this is an ideal place, for others they would run from it. As the owner said "artists and writers tend to stay here"

Room Tip: There are only 3 or maybe 4 rooms, we had the #4 room which had its own BR (quite small) and two dou...
