Description: Opening its doors in 1999, Vera Mae’s began its story as a lunch delivery and catering business through its South Walnut street storefront in downtown Muncie. Owner Kent Shuff pioneered the revitalization of Muncie’s historical district and later expanded the restaurant in 2002. Formerly Ballard Hardware, Kent and co-owner and partner, Steve Fennimore created the Ballaird Hall, increasing the original Bistro from 54 seats to 210 seats. Come explore the living history of a Midwestern staple. On our walls you will find part namesake, Vera Yates (Kent's Grandmother) at her restaurant and gas station, along with David Letterman on an evening out. Everything has a story as the modern local art and historic architectural elements combine for an intoxicating evening of hand-crafted cuisine and delectable drinks.

My wife and I here for my birthday, it was our first time out with out our 2 year old in over a year. I was hopeful that the meal would live up to the hype from trip advisor, but sadly it did not. The meal started out well, my soup and rolls were fantastic. And the seared Ahi tuna appetizer was equally as good. However, the wheels fell off with the entrees. I had the rack of lamb on suggestion from the server. And my wife had the special of the night, a filet Oscar (steak with crab and hollandaise). Both entrees came with veg and starch of the day, asparagus and mashed "Peruvian purple potatoes". The asparagus was overcooked to the point that it mashed with a fork, and the potatoes, although quite flavorful, were very dry and almost inedible. As for the proteins, both the lamb and the beef were severely lacking in seasoning, and were over cooked. Again, the soup, tuna, and rolls were great, some of the best I've ever had. But, when the check totals more than $50 per person (without alcohol), I expect to talk about how good the steak was not that the complementary rolls were great. Very disappointing.

Hands down-one of the best meals anywhere! Would expect this in big cities-Indianapolis,Chicago,etc. Soooo nice to find in downtown Muncie-closer and much more convenient than driving to downtown Indy for a special place-great atmosphere too!!! Both casual and formal at the same time.

This is the only choice in Muncie for fine cuisine. The product is always excellent, visit after visit.

The service at Vera Mae's is always top notch. Great selection of food you cannot find anywhere else in Muncie. Unfortunately, the only "upscale" restaurant in Muncie. Having said that, it isn't overly stuffy, either. Very nice environment, inside or outside for bistro seating. They have a very elegant and private wine cellar dinner room great for groups or private parties. The owners have been known to even coordinate weddings in the restaurant. Food is consistently good and recent update to the menu was a welcomed change. The owners are always present and are great supporters of the revitalization of downtown Muncie as a destination.
