In reading the reviews before we left for Tampico, we, too, were a little hesitant about Club Maeva. However, upon arrival, we found them well organized and very friendly. Check in was a breeze (and early). The room was a tad disappointing, in as much as the decor was very dated and limited storage space and no coffee maker (we brought our own - Cdn Tire $20). A number of guests upgraded their room for a small fee which is probably better done down in Tampico rather than going through Sunquest. Best place to be is the Solarium - get to meet lots of people and the bartenders are extremely creative and always willing to make fancy tropical drinks. The food was good (not great) - choices were limited (remember, you're not on a cruise ship). The golf course is well worth playing and well organized. We played four times and had a great time - but please remember to look at the house on the right of the 7th ladies tees - . Extra water hazards, known as pools, are in play. Generally, staff was very friendly and helpful and most spoke English. Four Coronas at the clubhouse costs $6.00. Four waters at the clubhouse cost $6.00. No typo!

All in all, we had a good time - met lots of great Canadian golfers.

Reviewed March 29, 2006

Just returned from Club Maeva on Wednesday March 29th. I want this to truely be an accurate account of this property, and not one influenced by weather and a few kinks along the way. I reviewed this property before i left and found as many pics/reviews as possible. I wanted a trip to fit my budget for this time of year, play a little golf, entertain myself and family, and have a few drinks and laughs along the way. I travelled with my wife and two boys (ages 5months and 2 1/2) my sister-in-law (help with the boys) and a family friend.

As you probably already know the town of tampico isn't the most picturesque, and day trips are truely day trips. (3hrs. to get to final destination in some cases.)

So, if your going to just relax and play some golf? You will be happy! The golf course is 30 minutes from the resort, but you travel with other golfers and the conversations make the trip a short one. The course itself is very well laid out and in great shape. Extras are cart 15U.S., Corona 1.50, cigs 2.00. A few workers may approach to sell you a bag of balls for 5.00 and its actually worth it. Get an early tee off, which i suggest you email (---) and get the tee off time schedule and book. (we had 8:50am tee off's everyday and shuttle left at 8:10, enough time to shower up and have a quick bite before we left).

THE RESORT: Check in is very quick, your rooms are already assigned and they have plenty of drinks waiting for you. Sunquest really is the only provider of travellers to this resort, the rest are local's staying at the property. (Yes Local's, the resort is booked till Early September with No Charters coming from anywhere...including Sunquest. We were on their last flight.) The Rooms: Very Poor!! The standard room as 2 double beds a night stand, desk, and tv. Yes the beds are hard and the decor is prison like. Very washed out, nothing homey about it. Upgrade if possible for 20U.S. per night for a junior suite. This gives you a little larger room with futon and table and 2 chairs. Still the decor is very plain. (white walls, white furniture ...you know what i mean). The food: Selection really is poor, a few dishes very suprisingly tastie! and the hamburgers were always there for back up. No!!!! Bacon for breakfast! This shocked me! Fresh Omelletes could be made and eggs any style, but the buffet was always the same. Scrambled eggs made with a different ingredient each day. Selection is minimal! Deserts are party size. This was a typical buffet, but quite small in size. I knew this before going, what i didnt know was the times they are open. 7am for breakfast, 1pm for lunch. and 7pm for dinner. I'm sure it sounds fine to most but for travellers with children? Thing of your nap times and evening. They close for an hour and a half before lunch and dinner so there's nothing to eat. We packed the kids up for dinner for the first night at 6pm only to be told to comeback at 7. We made it routine but it was frustrating. Advice, tip before you eat, your service will be second to none. The service here was generally excellent, they would go out of their way sometimes.

The Pools/Beach: If you have young children like us that need to have a nap after lunch?? Its a long hike from your room, over the bridge (3flights of stairs on both ends), past the pool, and too the water! Can be very tiring!! Don't forget anything in the room! Food only starts at 1pm around the pool at the beach, so bring snacks and water. The pool inside the hotel grounds is old but warm (6 feet deep with a sitting ledge) great temp for the children but really too deep if they dont swim. The larger pool (looks bigger in pictures) was very cold, but could be refreshing on a humid day. (Are weather was not great!) This pool was rarely used if at all, a few sun tanner's and that was it. The adult pool is very quaint and nice but yet too small. (water temp is pretty good) Jacuzzi's as described are not built in, something you would buy for your back yard (4man at best)..1 was not working our entire stay. You have to be 21yrs. old to go to this pool and there is no stairs or entry point to the beach from here!

Entertainment: It really is Amateur! but they do try very hard to entertain you at the evening show. They start at 8pm and are generally outside. Aerobics/Scuba Diving were at the small warm pool by the lobby. Their presence made it feel busy, but its not.

Lobby Bar: Serves all day till 2am except on Sundays. The games room is nothing to write home about, the projector for the tv area was missing and the ping pong table had no net. Its called the lobby bar, but it is a separate area. The lobby Bar/Games Room/etc is all in the same room but is rarely used because it is non-smoking. I respect that for the children and non-smokers but there really was few children and most people seemed to smoke? Go figure!

Overall: How can you beat the price (we paid 867.00cdn per person INCLUDING the taxes). Flight, Rooms, Food, Alchol, and 4 rounds of golf ...how can you beat that???

The truth: I've stayed at quite a few 5 star properties and you notice a big difference when you take a step backwards in the star rating. This property is truely no better then 2.5 maybe 3.0. Sunquest actually had a meeting with the staff about carrying this property next year. If you tip a little it will go along way. Service was good! Remember you are the only charter they have to look after, or one of a very few.

If you have young children Do not Go!!! You can't even let them use the swing set, you have to leave them in their care. Argh! Trips away from the resort really are too far!!

The budget traveller who likes to golf? You'll leave satisfied!

If you have stayed at five star and even 4 star properties...Don't Go! You will have a hard time excepting this as a 4 star and will ware on you! Spend an extra few bucks and go somewhere else.

This site was helpful to me before i left and i hope this helps someone else. The price took me there and you get what you pay for!!

Almost forgot, Night Life? Really non-existent, the disco had no more then 30ppl on the busiest of nights. But it is only as fun as you make it! Don't expect in room movies, let alone a remote control for it (you have to pick one up from the front desk after check in).

Cheers!!! Email me for questions if you like! shawncochrane@rogers.com

Just got back yesterday from a week at the Maeva Miramar Tampico. Overall it was a pleasant trip and very good value for the price.(under $900 CDN per person). We went to relax, play a bit of golf and to soak in some sun. We got to do all three but would have enjoyed more sun.

Trip was through Sunquest (I believe the only tour company that flys there) The Skyservice plane was an Airbus 320 that had tight seating but as it was only 1/2 full there was plenty of room available. There was a meal (typical airline type) for both the flight down and return. Return flight arrived back in Toronto quite a bit early.

Clearing customs upon arrival in Mexico was fairly quick. However, when leaving you have to check out of the hotel between 8:00am and 8:30am on the Wednesday and it takes up to an hour to get checked in at the airport. Upon arrival 2 large airconditioned busses took us to the resort and the ride was about 20 minutes from the airport. The City of Tampico isn't the most eye appealing I've ever seen. ie. Oil refineries, run down houses and a lot of garbage on the streets and boulevards. But hey, we weren't staying in the City and the resort itself was new, clean and fairly well maintained.

Resort staff are very friendly. Desk and cleaning, maintenance staff speak very little English. Sunquest rep. and show perfomers (who also help out during the day) speak excellent English.

We had a basic room that had two beds (size appeared to be between a double and queen, if that's possible). As someone else pointed out the beds were very hard. All rooms have a balcony and the A/C worked great.

The pools by the beach were a little cold and the sports pool was as warm as soup (no kidding).

The buffet was OK. The food selection did vary somewhat from night to night and was usually warm. Service was also OK. You're allowed 2 dinners at the A la carte restaurant, which were very good.

The golf course is very nice. It's not on the Gulf but does have quite a few holes over and around ponds and lagoons. Greens were quick and in great shape. The fairways were in good shape. Beer or softdrinks, water are only $1 from the beverage cart. With the package you don't get green fees included for Saturday or Sunday (they cost an extra $40US per person and are limited). We liked the course enough to also pay and play on Sunday. The course was a little busier than others before me have commented as most of the 90 or so people on our flight played each morning. My only criticism about the course is that they could rake the bunkers.

As far as tours, I heard the waterfall / spa trip is one that you don't want to miss. No freshwater largemouth bass fishing in the area (despite what the brochure or internet says).

We had poor weather for 3 of the 7 days. ie. no sun and very strong winds. It cleared up quite a bit towards the end of the trip and we had some sun and temps in the low to mid 80s. I understand that the weather isn't as reliable as other locations in Mexico or the Carribean. I did check the weather on the Internet before we went (Accu-weather, Weather Forecaster and Weather Underground) and their forecasts were fairly accurate. Looks like the weather for the people this week will be great, as it was for the week before us. Oh well.

All in all, if you're into golfing at a fairly decent course in a warm place, then this is a great value. If you wish to give it a try I'd suggest you do so soon because with the majority of the patrons being from Canada, and only 1/2 a plane load of people coming in each week, Sunquest might stop flying there. That would be a shame.

I'd rate the value 8.5 out of 10 and the trip overall a 7.5 out of 10.

Mike

I just came back with 3 other people and we really miss it. We were hesitant about going because of some negative reviews but we were grateful we still went. This was our first time to Mexico so we don't have anything to compare it to but for the price it was perfect! The weather was absolutely amazing, sunny and warm for 7 days straight, not a drop of rain to dampen our spirits. Great for tanning and swimming. The swim up bar was my favourite, however I wished it was bigger. The beach was nice and the pools very clean. The food was excellent, I ate better there then I ever do at home. The staff are very friendly and make you feel at home. They all work very hard so don't be shy to tip, they will make it worth it. Instead of taking the shopping tour we called a cab and went into the shopping area in Tampico. It's a crazy place, very hectic but interesting. One of the staff members told us what to say to the cab driver to take us where we wanted to go. The cab drive only costs us 5 or 7 dollars, don't except anymore than that. We also rented 4 wheelers which are not owned by the resort, but are located across the street. There's no insurance or helmets so it's at your own risk. We went ocean kayaking, that was fun but alot of work. We were hoping to see dolphins but it was too late in the day. The night life is pretty quiet if your a young couple. The disco was dead, but we made it fun. I would recommend this place for family and seniors looking for a quiet place to relax. Don't be shy to feed the stray dogs and cats that sometimes roam the resort, they are all very sweet and rely on us to survive. Overall the resort is extremly clean, which I look for. It's a great place to get away from the everyday life.

The hotel was closer to a 3.5 star than a 4 star. Excellent and helpful staff. If you want money changed, they change US or Cdn BUT will not accept torn bills or bills that have any writing on them( the type the bank writes when they are counting bills). Also the hotel runs low on cash frequently. Very poor (non-existant) childrens programs just an area to drop off your children. We went with 3 children and found out that the horse back riding has only 3 horses and you must be 18+ to ride, also very expensive. Hard beds and hallways noisy. We were above the front enterence (3rd floor of an open foyer) and heard the golfers every morning at 6:00am. Food was fair - a reasonably good variety but the same every day. The gulf coast has a lot of waves at this time of year which is great if you like that type of thing. Taxis from hotel to downtown are cheap and worth the trip with the city a safe place to look around. Nightime entertainment was very amateur and put on by the staff of the hotel. Bikes are available but only in the bike tour which takes place 2 times per day. You cannot use them on an as desired basis as they keep them locked up the rest of the time. Lack of closet space but most live out of suitcases anyways. Beach excellent, lots of room and you don't have to fight for deck chairs by the beach or the hotel. The hotel is NOT on the beach but across a small road. The hotel has a bridge that takes you across to the other swimming pool area and the beach. The restaurant by the beach is non-existant. They have 3 items, hamburger, fries and hot dogs that are made at the main hotel and carried across to the bar. As a result it is cold and they constantly run out of food. Generally the hotel is a very quiet area so this is not for you if you love your night life. Did I have a good time - yes, would I go back, no. Hope this helps

We have just returned today from a week at Maeva in Tampico. The weather was excellent, the staff were very friendly and helpful. My only complaints are THE HARD BEDS, I could not sleep well all week. The food was OK not that great. I suggest you take ear plugs if you go as the hallways echo and are very noisy and a mattress cover, and a lawn chair pad.
