Bob Evans has always been a "go to" choice for my spouse and me. You just can't go wrong with a breakfast special, right? Wrong! While the Bob Evans in Madison, IN has always been one of our favorites, we were truly let down with our last visit. We had not been in since the grand re-opening (essentially renovating the entrance area), and were sorely disappointed with our overall experience. While the front entry area is much improved (easier entry/exit, cleaner), not much else appeared to be renovated. The check-out counter now also includes a nice area to display the expanded to-go bakery items (yummy!), with sample cups of the new offerings being provided. These sample cups are a wonderful idea and should be continued!
While the remainder of the restaurant may have been renovated, the dining area was not particularly clean so it was difficult to discern if it had been redone. There was food on the floor and the table tops could have used a bit of attention. The menus, however, were clearly refurbished (though not completely, as some selections were "updated" with taped changes) and cleaner, which is greatly appreciated as no one wants to handle grimy, dirty menus. The jam/jelly container had not been re-stocked, however. This, as well as the general state of cleanliness, were disappointing given that we were there at an off hour (late afternoon).
Also, the restroom desperately needed attention. It was not only unclean, but there were no paper towels--at all. This is the type of thing that one would expect to be checked in the slow period between the lunch and dinner rushes.
Our server, Shelby, was a pleasant young woman, but did not appear to be very experienced. She was competent in taking our drink and meal orders, but we had asked for a specific type of jelly and she never brought it (fortunately we found some at another table on our own). Most importantly, one of our orders came to the table completely wrong. This could have/should have been checked before bringing the meal to the table. So, while one of us had a well prepared and delicious meal, one of us was left waiting for a do-over (thus the average rating on food that is noted--one nice meal, one unacceptable meal equals average). To his credit, the manager, Jake, stopped by the table and noted that the do-over order was being expedited in the kitchen.
Here's where it all falls apart, though. The re-done order was also unacceptable. They clearly rushed it a bit too much in the kitchen and completely under-cooked the eggs. Is there much that is nastier to eat than raw egg white? Also, the fruit cup consistented of only overly ripe pineapple and cantalope pieces. Granted, it is not prime fruit season, but is there ever a good reason for serving spoiled fruit? Our server did not inquire about the second meal and simply left us with our check. When the manager walked by and asked how the meal was, I explained the problems with the undercooked eggs. He asked if any accommodation had been made and when I said "no" he, to his great credit, took the meal off of our check and apologized. He also checked us out at the cash register and apologized again. Thank you Jake!
Will we go back to this location? Sure. But, there is much room for improvement to meet the basic level of standards and to be a grand location worthy of a grand re-opening.
