We stayed at the Hillside Inn on a Friday and Saturday night. A large wedding party was also staying at the facility. Things were noisy and we could hear conversations from the adjoining rooms. It seems that there is no insulation in the walls.. or very little. We returned to our room to rest on Saturday afternoon but could not sleep because of a barking dog that was left in a room down the hall. The policy of the hotel is "no pets" but they told us they made an exception. Nothing could be done about it because the owners of the dog were out sight seeing.
That night, It was extremely noisy when the individuals who had been at the wedding returned. A group of women were in the room to our right and engaged in loud conversations and laughter for a long time. Another loud group was in the room above us. When someone upstairs complained about the noise that group came down to visit in the room on the other side of us. Apparently miffed because there had been complaints they kept slamming the door to their room. This went on for a long time. Eventually we complained. We heard their phone ring when the front desk called them but there was no change in their behavior. It was at least 3 AM until the place started to quiet down. No serious attempt was ever made to ask the guests to be quiet.
The next morning we spoke with several other guests in the dining room who were also very upset and had little sleep through the night. The person at the front desk was very apologetic but the only compensation for a sleepless night that we received from the manager was a 10% discount.
In their defense we had stayed at the Hilltop before. During those visits they were not busy and there was not a noise issue. The rooms are average but we liked to stay there because it is located near the historic district and each room has a little balcony.
We ate at the Mexican Restaurant on Saturday night. The food was mediocre.
The most interesting thing was that the silverware in the restaurant had been monogrammed at one time.... but someone had ground or sanded the monograms off each piece!
I was hoping for a much needed rest but our relaxing weekend getaway was a disaster.

This is by far the best hotel to stay at in Madison. You have a great view of the river and the town with a private balcony. The rooms are nice and the staff pleasant. It's downtown in the mix of everything so you can walk to where you want to go.

I am accustomed to nice Hampton Inns; a Hampton this is NOT. Room smelled stale, bed was rock hard, but hotel was quiet; personnel friendly and helpful. Rooms have a private balcony overlooking the Ohio River (and restaurant rooftop - Room 102). TV worked well, nice bathroom and hot shower with Gilchrist & Soames soaps, etc. Also enjoyed having ceramic coffee cups and highball glasses. NOT a good-looking continental breakfast. We didn't bother trying it or the Mexican Restaurant on-site. For $89 it was okay. Hope to not have to stay there again but it was our only choice on short notice.

My husband and I recently stayed at the hillside inn in Madison. The view was nice with private balconies, the whirlpool in the room was nice, but otherwise the room was terrible, and let me preface that I've stayed at lots of different hotels and never complained. The bed was TERRIBLE, like sleeping on a rock, and everything felt cheap about the room- the sheets, the carpet, etc. Walls are very thin- I heard my neighbors snore all night. No restaurant as advertised, and "full breakfast" equates to continental breakfast. We checked out a day early and they refunded our second night without any questions.
I would not stay here again. It was probably nice at one time, but not now, and not worth the $138.00 price tag.
