“Nice place for a family reunion”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

We were quite pleased. The pool was nice. The bathroom was quite fancy in our suite, with a shower with a gazillion heads, a huge bath tub and lots of marble and gold colored trim, though some of the carpeting in the suite was a bit worn.

Breakfast was good. On the weekend, we went for the all you can eat buffet.
Nice view of the Ohio.

The inn sits several hundred feet above the river on a cliff. (Thus the name) Even so, it is dwarfed by several towering smokestacks across the river. I found the towers fascinating, actually, even if they are a bit overwhelming. You can't see them from the dining room.

Room Tip: As a family of four, we might have preferred having a couple of queen beds to the layout of the suit...

Stayed at the inn for the weekend to attend the Art Festival in Madison. The inn has a beautiful view of the Ohio River. It had a great buffet in the evening which was very reasonable. The rooms are very clean & the beds were comfortable. They have an indoor pool & hot tub which was also very clean. It only took us minutes to get to downtown Madison. We already have our reservations to stay here again next year.

Clifty Inn is a great place for a family getaway. There are many activities to keep everyone busy. You can go hiking, swimming, play games, sit by the fire, look out of the many windows at the beautiful scenery, and more here in and around the inn. Also, going into town (which is right down the street) was a big hit with our family! We loved the beautiful and historic buildings. The shops are very nice and fun to look through. We have already reserved a room for next year!

Room Tip: Book your rooms well in advance. It's a very popular place!

My family has visited Clifty Falls State Park numerous times, but we stayed at the Clifty Inn for the first time on October 19. It's a great place to stay. The room was clean and comfortable (although the heater was a bit loud and the WiFi connection in the room was spotty). Both wings are connected to the main building via a hallway or enclosed bridge, so you can easily get back and forth between different areas.

There's lots of space indoors and outdoors for relaxing, reading, playing board games, etc. And the views are great. Yes, there are smokestacks across the highway, but you don't have to just look in that direction.

We ate a couple of times in the inn's dining room. The food and service were good, and the prices were great. There was also plenty of room, even though I think the inn was fully booked.

Best of all, you're right next to the tennis courts, nature center, and trailhead for several trails.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms on the riverview side have balconies.

My husband & I stayed at the Clifty Inn on 10/2/12, and will definitely come back--it's one of the most relaxing places we've had the pleasure to have "discovered", a little gem of a place in Clifty Falls State Park. The Inn overlooks the Ohio River & the hills of Kentucky, & would be spectacular when the autumn leaves are in full color! The patio/terrace area is one of the best outdoor features, with numerous chairs & tables, but even in the colder months, there is a long hallway just off the terrace, with wonderful rocking chairs, that has floor-to-ceiling windows that allow a better viewing experience. There is also a firepit, with firewood available by request at the front desk, as well as s'mores ingredients for sale in the gift shop. The front desk staff were all friendly & courteous; they also ring up purchases from the gift shop, so there wasn't anyone hovering over me while I browsed.
Our room was spacious & comfortable, on the 4th (top) floor of the Inn, with a good-sized balcony that had 2 wooden chairs & a low table, which we used as a footstool. We were in Room 408, which is located toward the end of the Riverview wing, but not so far as to have the view obstructed by the trees. As mentioned in other reviews, the immediate view was lacking in that there was a coal plant directly below us, & 3 huge steam/smoke stacks off to the side, but the noise from the plant was not a factor, although it might be if you wanted to spend a lot of time on your balcony. Once we closed the balcony door, the noise disappeared. (Just a note, this is the only hotel we've stayed in that mentioned a "quiet time" to be observed between 11:00 pm & 6:30 am, which I really appreciated.) The room would be good for more than a one-night stay in that there was a semi-kitchenette--full-size sink, microwave, small refrigerator, & a little coffeemaker, all of which would allow snacks or even certain meals.
While we were there to celebrate our anniversary, the Clifty Inn would also be good for families, since they have a large "family room" with a big fireplace, stocked with puzzles, board games, a few toys, a big-screen TV, & some very interesting taxidermy displays of local animals.
We ate dinner & breakfast the next day in the Falls Restaurant. just adjacent to the family room--they offer a full menu, serving breakfast until 2 pm, but are open only until 9 pm. The decor matches the rest of the Inn, rustic cabin-style, with glass chimney lanterns on the tables. Our servers were also friendly, courteous, & knowledgeable about the menu without being pushy. Our ribeye steaks were perfectly cooked, my salad extremely fresh, & the tomato basil soup of the day a surprising gourmet offering. The apple dumpling we shared for dessert is not to be missed! Breakfast was inexpensive, with great omlette meals at just $5.99--the prices were really reasonable for a hotel restaurant, we spent less than $50 total for both meals, including taxes & tips.
All of this, plus the state park setting & peaceful atmosphere, means that we would highly recommend the Clifty Inn & Falls Restaurant to anyone!

Room Tip: We would most likely not pay the extra amount for the balcony room, unless we were staying in the wa...

We enjoyed a family reunion at the Clifty Inn in Madison in August of 2012. The accomadations were pleasant as was the staff. The location is a short distance from shopping in downtown Madison and the beautiful riverfront. Another reviewer spoke about noise from the power plant? Never heard a sound! The view up the river is absolutely beautiful. I spent early hours one morning playing my guitar at the outdoor firepit looking at the gorgeous Kentucky hills across the river while the water flowed gently by. Wasn't the first time, won't be the last!

The walking trails and falls at the park make for a very nice nature experience.

We visited Clifty Inn four years ago and loved it. After a recent death in the family, my husband and I needed a quiet getaway...somewhere to relax and unwind. Clifty Inn came to mind and we decided on a return visit. It is a lovely inn with many areas for relaxing outside the confines of your room. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The only problem I could see was the fact that the linens all needed to be replaced. Everything seemed to be showing wear, the towels were frayed on the edges, the dust ruffle on one of the beds was ripped away from the portion that goes under the mattress, and the blanket on one of the beds had been stained by some careless use of magic markers. We will probably return again, maybe by then someone will do a little linen shopping.

Room Tip: Ask for a riverview room, well worth the extra money.
