Went to Arni's for lunch with my wife and granddaughter. We enjoyed a nice lunch and they were very friendly with us and our 2-year old granddaughter. Wife had a pepperoni pizza. She said it was good, but greasy on the bottom. I always love their Texas Barbeque or Stromboli. Great sandwiches. We especially liked the nostalgic signs around the restaurant. They have a nice dining room upstairs for large groups too.

From time to time we travel from our home in Indianapolis to visit friends 25 miles away in Lebanon, Indiana. Almost every time we meet at Arni's downtown on the square. The parking is easy as there is a large lot beside the building. There is plenty of seating space (we always try to get ahead of the crowd), and the surrounding are such that we can all talk and visit without music that is often so loud no one can communicate. Of about a dozen times we are been to this particular Arni's location we have never had a bad meal, and in every case we have been very pleased with what we ordered.

Arni's is an Indiana favorite, having been established in 1965 in Lafayette, Indiana by the late Arni Cohen. His death in 2002 did not signal the end of the restaurant, as the mantel of leadership was picked up by his two sons Kurt and Brad. There are now 10 company locations and 8 franchise locations throughout Indiana.

We visited Arni's about 1:30 pm on a weekday. There were quite a few diners but it was not packed by any means. We were waved to a booth by one of the bus boys. We then sat and waited for menus. I didn't time it but it was probably around 7 or 8 minutes with still no menus. And this was after several servers walked by out booth but paid no attention. I finally got up and went to the service window to ask for menus which were then brought to us.

After that service as much better. Our server took our drink order, came back for our food order, and the food was delivered in good time. After that we didn't see much of her but fortunately didn't need anything.

Arni's, as near as i can tell, is a small chain with locations in various Indiana cities. It is the first time we had eaten at one. The menu is large with a nice range of salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas and entrees. I had the spaghetti and meatballs (which came with a nice side salad, excellent homemade dressing and great garlic bread). It was very good - the pasta was cooked properly, the sauce was good and the meatballs tasty. Too bad the parmesan cheese lacked much flavor. Maybe it was out of a green tube.

My wife had what is called a "Gut Buster" sandwich (no she didn't eat all of it!). This is sort of like an Italian sandwich with salami, cheese etc. She reported that it was very tasty. We still have half to finish.

I think the delay at the beginning of service was caused by the bus boy who seated us and probably did not inform a server. However it was still irritating that several servers walked by and must have noticed that we hadn't been helped yet did not bring us menus.

I think next time we are in Lebanon we will try a different place.

This Arni's is a classic American Pizza "joint." The walls are decorated with nostalgic decor (1950s) and the service is a classic American "pizza slinger" vibe.

Definitely try the Arni's junior (or senior) salads, which are loaded to the brim. The BBQ chicken pizza is also a good recommendation.
