“Lovely Views”
Reviewed August 16, 2010

The view was amazing, over looking the water with big windows, the balcony was small but adequate. The furniture was modern and bed was comfy. We also enjoyed the spa. The Whalers Inn restuarant was busy and service was average but the food was amazing.
The room was a bit dusty and probably needs a good clean which was a bit disapointing for nice accomodation but everything else was great.
Overall we were happy with the accomodation and plan to stay again in summer time.

Whaler's Inn, Whalers Cove South Australia

What a disappointment this place was. Reading the company website on a fairly new hotel we thought it would be top shelf. The views from the balcony were spectacular, but the interior of our two bed room unit left a lot to be desired. The carpets were stained, the kitchen floor was greasy as was the exhaust fan and kitchen curtain/blind. The lounge had 21 pieces of furniture in an area of 15x20ft. The television was so small you could just see the screen, the cane furniture had dust and hairs in between the ratten and the cost was $390.00 a night

Fantastic room 4*: recent furniture, very nice decoration, very (very) spacious, very clean, separate toilets. We went there because of cheap rates 89AU$ (4*) on wotif.com but we had a room without any outside view (except on the next door). A famous restaurant (over-crowded on our arrival). If you can afford it, ask for a more expensive room with sea view. Unfortunately this hotel is very far from downtown (15 minutes by car, the first time we got lost), nothing to do near the hotel without a car.

My husband and I have stayed at the Whalers Inn Resort at least once a year for the past three years. It is our favourite 'get away from the city' spot. We always stay in a studio room, they have brilliant views of the ocean, a double spa bath, and very spacious rooms. Very reasonably priced. The last time we stayed was in June 2007 and the weather at Victor Harbor was awful, absolutely freezing, but our room was warm and cozy (the reverse cycle heater was on in our room when we arrived, how nice!) There were a couple of friendly magpies too, sitting on our balcony. A great place to go and relax, the resort is a lot quieter in winter, very busy in Summer. Will be back there again next year!

  • Liked — View from room and spa bath
  • Disliked — All the stairs, but not a huge problem

We stayed at the Whaler Resort in Victor Harbour in January 2007.

We had driven up the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne and had stayed in some preety ropey places en route! The Whalers was just such a nice place to get to! It is at the end of a long sweeping bay with spectacular far reaching views back over the bay with mountains behind in the distance. A pelican swooped down to feed as we got out of the car. We were two adults and two teenagers and had booked two sea view suites. These were very nice indeed, really clean and spacious. Good marble bathroom with spa tub, little kitchenette, fridge, table and chairs and a balcony to sit on to look at that amazing view.

We found the staff super helpful as we were trying to change our flights from Adelaide the following day and they allowed us to use their computer access. Also we had not booked breakfast and on asking if I could take some orange juices up to the rooms was given two cartons to take - no charge, she said, that was nice.

WE used the place as a base to visit Kangaroo Island from so were not there during the day. There seemed to be a lot going on with tennis courts, beach etc.

Had a nice bar.

WE really liked this place it was comfortable, clean, cheerful, well run by friendly people. Great base for Kangaroo Island and to see Granite Island and the penguins.

Had a great HUGE pizza from a place up the esplanade which was obviously the best place in town as mobbed out.

Would recommend the Whalers Resort, would have liked to stay longer and get into the place.

We stayed at the Inn for two nights and found it to be very comfortable accommodation. Our apartment consisted of three bedrooms which were located downstairs on the lower level; a bathroom with a huge spa bath was also attached to this level. Upstairs was a large open plan area with a spacious kitchen with good quality utensils, microwave, stove, and tea and coffee facilities. A lounge room and dining room were combined with a sliding door which leads to a big open balcony with beautiful views of the sea.

This hotel is not a five star establishment but is a very comfortable country family style accommodation. There is a tennis court, swimming pool, restaurant and bar. Parking is also provided outside your unit. The restaurant has an interesting menu with a good quality wine list. We found the food to be excellent and the staff very attentive.

The hotel is located at “The Bluff” which is approx 10 minutes drive south of Victor Harbour and nestles on the foreshore of the bay. We noticed that it had changed hands and new renovations are supposed to be happening in the future. The furniture could be easily updated to make it a little more modern. (Especially the bed quilts).

The only thing we found was the location was annoying, as it was located outside of town. There are numerous pubs in town to have a good cheap meal, which also have accommodation available if you wanted to be closer to the action.

If thinking of staying at Cape Jervis before heading to Kangaroo Island then forget it, Victor Harbour is a lovely seaside town and far more appealing and interesting, Whaler’s Inn is approx 30 minutes drive away from Cape Jervis and a far better choice to be positioned.

I would highly recommend this hotel for those who are travelling to Kangaroo Island or for large groups or families. For singles, Victor Harbor has some fine pubs and hotels to stay at.

What to do: Walk across to Granite Island and see the penguins at dusk.

Visit the town of Goolwa, Port Elliot, Hindmarsh Island, and Coorong National Park and see the Murray River Mouth. For some awesome scenery take a walk on the “Heysen Trail” which can be connected to just past the Bluff or at Parsons beach or Newland Headlands. Head to Cape Jervis to catch the ferry to Kangaroo Island.
