“ruined view... over priced...”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

Hi. Just spent a weekend at the Whalers to celebrate a one year anniversary. Great expectations of sitting on our balcony and enjoying the view with a glass of wine as promoted by the business. Paid $229 for a night and ended up disappointed. Our tiny balcony had a view of a roof and an ugly metal bar placed at exact eye height blocking off the sea view. (See photo) Dined at Éat' (attached restaurant) and felt ripped off there too. $40 Seafood Platter was small and of average quality. 3 prawns, small dried fish and oily calamari. It came with a few chips and a basic garden salad. My local fish shop does better. However, to be fair, the room was fine (give or take poor TV reception and no music facilities).. We are balcony people and love to enjoy the ambience. If you are the same this place is not for you.

Room Tip: I believe the expensive suites and pool view rooms are good.

Having been to the Whalers before (in a studio ) l was looking forward to returning to this lovely place again and this time booked an apartment. On arrival we noticed a bad odour that filled the living area on the top floor , the bottom floor with the bedroom was fine, we opened the doors and aired it out for a while, then we went out, the smell was still there when we returned but reception were closed. They were also doing some work on the place so we had the noise of workmen as well, which meant no sleep in the next morning! We had planned to go to " ËAT" for dinner but sadly on a Thursday night it wasn't open!
Overall I was disappointed with our stay, for $300 a night I expected a little more, the view is magnificent, but the apartment was lacking. the ceiling fan was dirty, the downstairs shower head was green! and the lounge suite arms needed a good clean.. oh and that smell, when we checked out the next morning all we got was an apology and a promise to look into it. With lots of other accommodation down that way we will be spending our money elsewhere next time.

Been coming here fo 10 years and can't fault it, spacious studio apartment, fabulous views, who wouldn't come here. Paid more than twice as much in USA 3 weeks ago and in comparison this should be 10 star accommodation and we don't have to tip!

Difficult to rate this property fairly - its been around a long time, first as the Whalers Inn, but more recently the Apartments seem to have been separated from the the once attached restaurant [now called Eats] and Conference Center. [I was attending a conference].
The apartments are starting to show their age, but have a wonderful location and views, things worked, service was adequate and covered the basics. As a speaker at the Conference, I didn't pay the bill, so can't comment on value for money - but I wouldn't want to pay top dollars.

Room Tip: All the rooms have view.

This really needs a good makeover. The rooms are very tired. Some of the furniture old and the kitchens need an update. We would not recommend this again. We had friends who visited and we thought this was the spot. It has fantastic views in a great location but needs some work to impress overseas visitors.

Room Tip: Find a B and B or home stay

Stayed in a executive studio for $229 per night. Booking process was easy however the property name changed between making my booking and my stay, and i was not informed. This made things very difficult when trying to find the place when signage already reflected the new name. A simple one line email would have been nice to avoid the confusion.

For those unfamiliar with the area, it is a little way outside of the main town - about a 5-10 min drive. Car parking is easy though.

Once checked in, the room was very comfortable and views were spectacular. The stairs are quite sharp for anyone with mobility issues but that didnt bother us at all. Cleanliness was good, except for a spider making a nice home under the bathroom sink.

Had an excellent night's sleep. Bed was large and in good shape and very comfy. We were declined a 30-min later checkout the morning of arrival which was a bit disappointing.

Overall the place is great for a getaway if you want a tranquil setting although the price does seem a little steep for one-bedroom set-up.

A great place to unwind for a few days. The 3 bedroom apartment was comfortable for a family of 2 adults and 4 teenagers. It was disappointing that the shower in the downstairs bathroom wasn't working, but this was promptly fixed the following day when the helpful reception girl was notified, despite it being a weekend. The beds and pillows were comfortable, allowing restful sleep. The location was second to none, with commanding views from top balcony. A heritage walk along the clifftops behind the bluff, was fabulous, although no mention of it was made in the information brochures in the unit. It would have been a disaster to have missed it! I would return to this accommodation for another visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a view over Encounter Bay. I'd be dreadfully upset if I didn't get one of these! I d...
