The beer is unbelievable but the food is just average. Great place to relax and hang out. I would recommend starting with the beer sample and move on to pints after that.

While on vacation, we stopped in for a weekday lunch. Spouse ordered the Scottish Piper ale and I the Extra Special Bitters. Served in Imperial pint glasses, no less! Yum! Both of these brews rang our chimes and reminded us of our many travels overseas to the Country of Scotland. And what does one have with a beer? A burger of course! Several selections on the menu - pick what you like but none were gourmet. Our food was properly cooked and tasty. It is our habit to order a green salad in place of potatoes, so we can't judge the quality of the fries. The staff was friendly and served us well. We understand that three other pubs exist in downtown Lafayette, but the LBC certainlly set a standard. We'd go again.

We stopped in this famous University town where Purdue is across the river in West Lafayette. Lafayette Brewing makes some very good beer. While there I had a flight of five beers, small samples of their draft beers. It is good for sharing with a curious wife and if you get one you don't care for, you're not out of a lot of money. Each sample is $1.50. The eating area is nice with a large store front window looking at the passing foot traffic in town. My wife had a great hamburger and I had the fish and chips. Now I've been to Great Britain a number of times and fell in love with their fish and chips. I rarely find anything close to it in the states, even in so-called English, Irish, or Scottish style pubs. But this was pretty good. The only negative was the small pieces of cod, which is not true English Fish and Chips. Good beer, good food, what's there not to like?

The good news first: The root beer and other beverages (all made in-house) are still excellent. The bad news: They have a kitchen which seems to have forgotten how to listen to orders and then execute them as the customer wishes. In short, two out of the three of us left less-than-thrilled this time unlike like past visits when we raved.
So what is good? Well, we like it that there are a lot of choices on a broad menu and a lot of different varieties from burgers and bar-b-q to appetisers and desserts. They also offer a variety of in-house made beers and non-alcoholic items. The root beer is the best and (as always) we took a growler (actually two) home. The biggest issues this time were that the staff seemed slow and the kitchen did not listen. An "extra rare" burger (had them many times before here) came out almost medium well. Another ordered medium came out well done (ie: ruined). The person having the pulled pork said "it tasted like it came straight out of a box" which was not the way it used to be. Well, OK Maybe it was but it was worked on before so it did not seem as out of a box. This time, the kitchen did not seem to care and despite a full house out front (this is a HUGE restaurant) the server only half-heartedly offered a belated redo on the burgers, by which time we had places to go and things to do so we made do with what we had. The server also said "I'll get management to look at it and maybe give a discount..." That also did not happen and by the time we chased her down to pay the bill she never mentioned it and we honestly forgot. It was, in other words, not proactive which it also used to be.
My suggestion: Come for the beer (root or the harder kind), enjoy the atmosphere and order food, but be prepared for the fact that it's "just OK" and not stupendous as it used to be. Sad, but it's just another restaurant now and nothing special. We used to look forward to business in Lafayette just to eat here. Not anymore...though we will take home that delightful root beer again and again!

I chose to visit Lafayette Brewing for the beer, not the food or even the atmosphere. What impressed the most is that the server/host knew a great deal about the beer, and not only was able to describe each one in detail, but enjoyed doing so. I wish every brewpub had people like this! I enjoyed most of the beer, particularly the Black Rock cast ale (I may have the name slightly wrong). The Eighty-Five is also recommended, and the Java stout great for a dessert beer. The food here was good too. I had the bison burger and the cracked pepper fries, which I highly recommend. The atmosphere was great too; I felt comfortable as a single diner and the staff was so friendly. If you like beer give this place a try, and even if you don't like beer you likely will enjoy the atmosphere and find something tasty to eat. It was a very family friendly place with plenty of children there early in the evening.
