My wife and I stayed two nights in January. Due to rescheduled flights we didn't arrive till late but we were greeted with refreshing towels and cold fruit juice which was most welcome. Although it was late we were still offered dinner but as we were very tired we declined but the pot of tea brought to our room was most welcome. Our room was an excellent size and very comfortable with the air conditioning most welcome in the heat of Colombo although the lounge area downstairs did not have air conditioning making it a little uncomfortable to sit in.

Breakfast was fine and plentiful even though by some lack of understanding we got somebody else's the first morning.

We were served dinner on the roof top garden the second night, both choosing the Seer Fish on the recommendation of the hotel manager, the whole meal was excellent and we were entertained by the huge Fruit Bats flying by as we ate.

All the staff were friendly and efficient, the manager in particular made us very welcome and being aware of our interest in bird watching went out of his way to spot different birds for us.

It was our first hotel on our tour of Sri Lanka and we couldn't have chosen a better place to start, highly recommended.

I stayed at Villa Escondide whilst I was working briefly in Central Columbo. I very much hope to go back. It's quiet and beautiful with a very special atmosphere that is perfect when you've been in town all day. Exotic: hundreds of fruit bats fly overhead as the sun sets; cute little Tree Squirrels run up and down the trees; glow worms, mini komodo dragons, parrots roam in the tropical garden. Bit scary at first, especially when a bl**dy great monkey jumped onto the verandah one breakfast time! The staff are really very nice and offer immaculate service, distinguished by the way they leave you alone if you want but are there immediately when you need them. Deepal the manager had excellent English English - because he lived in England for years apparently - and that too is a rare asset to have on your side when making arrangements in Columbo. The only downside I can see is one you get with all accommodation - you can't choose your guests. A couple of nights I was woken up by one guy having a drunken conversation with his wife down the phone, but the rest of the time you wouldn't know anybody else was there to be fair.
