“Welcoming Inn close to Ridgeway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

My wife and I were walking the Ridgeway in a heat wave! We encountered a very warm welcome and extremely helpful and friendly staff. The room was spacious and comfortable.

There was a good choice on the evening dinner menu. The food was tasty and good value
and the surroundings pleasant. Our breakfast in the morning was equally delicious and set us up for our day's walking.

The landlord then offered us a lift back on the Ridgeway which we gladly accepted. We rather regretted we hadn't ordered a pack lunch as the ones prepared for other guests looked really appetising.

We had an over night stay at The Swan in East Ilsley and can only describe it as first class. The village is lovely and the Swan itself is the typical oldEnglish pub which id delightful. The staff are extremely pleasant, efficient, capable and helpful. The accommodation was excellent, the beds very comfortable and the breakfast was delicious and served on time with minimal of fuss and If we had known that the swan would have served us a meal on our arrival the previous evening we would have been very happy to have made use of that as the menu looked delicious. I can't recommend the Swan more highly and we are sorry we could not stay longer.

Room Tip: Our rooms were on the front of the building but although there was some traffic they did not cause u...

I enjoyed my stay here in a good sized, quiet and comfortable room. If walking The Ridgeway, care is needed to avoid walking on major roads to arrive at the pub. The pub itself is very cosy and the selection of beers is commendable. Evening meal was adequate but not special although the cooked breakfast was a treat!
The manager was extremely helpful both with guidance for my walk and allowing use of his computer for communication. I would have no hesitation in staying here again.

We loved the character and homely feel of the Swan Inn, the very friendly, efficient service from every single staff member - the landlord included, the hearty and tasty "comfort" food available (in addition to the really excellent breakfasts – not gourmet food but well-cooked and very satisfying), the immaculate cleanliness and comfort of the room we stayed in (fabulous towels, comfortable beds, good hot water, tea/coffee facilities, satellite TV, free WiFi). Overall, excellent value for money...highly recommended if you're looking for somewhere accessible to Oxford or just want to have some "chill-out" time in the Berkshire region. In fact, we loved everything about the Swan Inn, except that there was no ATM or shop in walking distance, which is hardly the fault of the hotel.

I am a country pub veteran, I enjoy going to local pubs in an around the local area, but the one pub I really enjoy coming to is the Swan in Easy Ilsley. I have been here a few times now and every time I can not fault it. The pub itself is in great condition, and well decorated. The prices are great for drinks, and from previous experience I found that the food it good too.

There is plenty of parking and a nice outdoor seating area when there is good weather. The pub is very easy to get to from either the back road or the A34.

Good beer garden (parents note, no play area, but there is a grassed garden area).
Very helpful and pleasant staff, and a nice atmosphere on an early Friday evening, when we stopped for dinner. Children very welcome.

Spotlessly clean, probably the cleanest pub I have ever been in. Decor well maintained and perfectly pleasant, a few brasses and oddments dotted around but not overpowering.

Food was delivered hot and in huge portions. Took a little while to arrive, but I don't mind too much if I know its freshly prepared. Pie Mash Peas and Gravy exceptionally good. A decent pub grub menu, with some nice specials, no gastro pub pretensions, just honest pub grub.

Doesn't break the bank either, a meal for 2 adults and a child including drinks came to £30 and we were all pretty much stuffed.

In summary an excellent place to visit when on a journey on the A34.

An old coaching inn that is begging for some TLC to bring it up to date . Our room was comfortable but in need of a lick of paint and some new curtains .Whilst the bathroom which was nicely decorated had a tiny handbasin and no holder for the shower . Net result , water on floor . In another bedroom we saw water coming through the ceiling downstairs which the owner took as normal .
The food was good pub food , being hearty and unfussy . Breakfast likewise set one up for the day . I should also mention the delightful Daisy who is the pub dog and added to the traditional feel of the place .
