My wife and I live locally and this used to be a weekly stop for us. A few years ago, I would've given this 5 stars. Now, I'd say 4 stars. I've been to 2 of the 3 other Chinese restaurants in town. And I'm depending on my friends' comments too, to confirm that the Great Wall is still the best of what Jasper has to offer. It used to be better, but is still good.
The buffet is the only thing I've ordered here, although you can order off the menu. It is well-tended and they work hard not to run out of things. There is a small salad bar and soft serve (I won't call it ice cream, but that's the idea) with toppings if you like that.
So if you eat Chinese food, you know they can make chicken about a dozen different ways, as is the case here. Their crab rangoon is always good. If you eat something with garlic in the name, you'll be tasting it for a long time afterward.
What I miss a lot is the way they used to make egg rolls. That frankly, is a very big disappointment and why my wife doesn't like coming here any more. The new 'egg rolls' seem like an attempt to save money, but in doing so they have alienated some customers. They are much smaller and have hardly anything in them. Kind of like spring rolls without any spring.
I asked a server about the pecan chicken dish they used to have. She told me, although I never had the temerity to ask the favor, that if it's something that's been on the buffet, you can ask for it and they'll make some at no charge. Maybe I'll do that.
If you're a local and you eat here and some other local restaurants frequently, you can check around town to purchase a discount card, called a Jasper Band Card. (Hoffman Office supply and Jasper High School are 2 places that sell the card). At the Great Wall you get 10% off with the discount card, and the card costs $10 and you can use it at a couple dozen places (different deals/discounts) around town.
The Great Wall was remodeled a few years ago. But sometimes the management is too busy running the restaurant to notice what patrons do. One time a men's room urinal was out of order for 3 months before it was fixed. As the seasons change, at times they forget(?) to turn on the a/c or heat. If you eat here in the winter, stay away from the front door. Although they have double entrance doors, you'll get an arctic blast when the front door opens. On Sundays at lunch it can get pretty busy. If you're in a hurry you can sit at the bar without waiting for a table if it suits you.
If the Great Wall brings back its old recipe egg rolls, I would give this place 5 stars.
