I have been to PF Changs in NYC, Chicagoland, LA, and in Indianapolis (both locations in Indy), each time it has been at the insistence of the majority of the group I was with, and at each visit I was consistently underwhelmed. I am bewildered as to the large following this place has. The two locations in Indy are always packed - lunch & dinner, the parking lot for the Keystone location is perpetually full & for love of god I cannot figure out what the attraction is! My visit to the Keystone location was for lunch (office occasion), the egg drop soup was bland and had the consistency of thick motor oil, it was soo flavorless that I sent it back in exchange for the hot & sour soup. The hot/sour was anything but hot & sour, it too had the viscosity of used motor oil (way too much starch!), it had cold spots and none of the flavor of a traditional hot & sour soup. The waitress suggested I add some of the house hot sauce, soy sauce, mustard sauce or some crazy mixed concoction of all three she prepared at the table! Yech!
I figure I’d order a ‘staple’ dish of cashew chicken to avoid any unpleasant surprises; I had to ask for extra rice to cover for the bad flavor (the sauce tasted like it was made from old soup bullion – salty with none of the flavor that comes from slow simmered broths). This place has consistently served some of the worst tasting Asian-themed food, apparently people are easily impressed by the happy staff (& the silly act of mixing sauces at your table). The Keystone location in Indianapolis has to take first place for the worst of all the PF Changes I’ve visited, the food here is bland and as commercially overrated as it gets. There are several decent alternatives in the area if you really want Asian – Benihana is about 300 yards away & although Benihana is certainly not a recommended choice it sure beats the sorry excuse of an Asian-themed restaurant that PF Changs at Keystone is. Avoid!
