“What a dream”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

My family dined at Hollyhock Hill for the first time this past week and what a dream meal it was for us. This was such a needed meal in the sense that I felt like I was back at Grandma's on a Sunday. The food was delicious and the service was extraordinary. Another thing that we simply loved was NO Televisions!!!!! Seems like you can't go anywhere anymore without a tv hanging on the wall blaring. This was old fashioned food, done well in an atmosphere of fine conversation and something no family has enough of just plain family time. We will be back and so looking forward to it! If you need a blast from the past, good food, good atmosphere, good family time or friend time and the chance to slow down you simply can't go wrong here.

“Great old-fashioned family style dinners”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

Hollyhock Hill restaurant does one thing, and does that one thing very well. It serves home-style dinners with classic down-home fare such as dreamy mashed potatoes, green beans, and corn alongside the entree of your choice. It is famed for its fried chicken, which is indeed very good, though not seasoned with more than salt and a bit of pepper. The appetizers are also old-school, including delicious sweetened pickled beets and cottage cheese. The only items that disappointed were the biscuits, which were way under par for the rest of the meal.

What it is not is a haute cuisine meal. If that is your expectation, you will be disappointed. However, if you are of a certain age, or from the South, or just enjoy what tastes like your mom's or grandma's Sunday dinner, then Hollyhock Hill is the place for you!

“Going home to Grandma's”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

I had my wedding reception here 34 years ago, and it hasn't changed a bit! It is in a beautiful setting. White table cloths and attentive servers were helping us to enjoy family dining with our family, party of 32 were with them in the dining room. The chicken was just as I recalled with accompanying sides. It was delicious!

“"Old School Charm" at it's BEST!!!”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Having just hosted a dinner party last night for my Dad's 87th birthday and prior to that, my parents 65th wedding anniversary family dinner last Thanksgiving week-end, I am moved to say a few words. Hollyhock Hill is a highly prized, 85-yr-old-plus, dining tradition on Indianapolis' far north-side in the vicinity of the Williams Creek/ Nora neighborhoods . This former country home still has the look and feel of genteel, Hoosier country-living of a by-gone era encapsulated in the late 1940's. The quaint charm of a country home continues in its warm interior. Or as one friend put its simple-but-elegant, picturesque charm in these terms, "The look and feel a late-1940's living room set-up to host my grandmother's bridge club!" It is not just a TRADITION...it's an Indianapolis DINING INSTITUTION!!!

Their family-style, Hoosier, pan-fried chicken dinners with all the trimmings are what they are famous for and that is what we had!. We were promptly served the appetizer of home-made vegetable juice cocktail is a classic. The chicken and rice vegetable soup warms your heart and is served from Thanksgiving and disappears just before Easter Sunday. The stand-outs from the salad course are the head-lettuce with their home-made house dressing ( a sweet-&-sour Vinaigrette) and their home-made pickled beets!!

In quick fashion, our server brought us the main course! The main course consists of platters of pan-fried chicken, bowls of real mashed potatoes, a bowl of home-made, creamy , pan-fried chicken gravy , and bowls of well-seasoned green beans and buttered corn , with the main course being rounded out by baking powder biscuits and apple butter!!!! The chicken IS outstanding!!!

The dessert course consisted of ice cream sundaes with sauces served family-style with a tri-pot condiment caddy offering, chocolate, butterscotch or creme de menthe! ( I drizzle a little creme de menthe and chocolate sauce to make a "Grasshopper" sundae! (Peppermint ice-cream is available by request Thanksgiving through New Years) We were served brownies with birthday candles for dad and his birthday!

The restaurant is a classic, whose food and ambiance has been a family, special-occasion, destination restaurant in Indianapolis/ Central Indiana-area approaching 90 yrs! Long may many generations of families come to enjoy its hospitality ...a Hoosier tradition at its best...Hollyhock Hill !!!

p;s. I was just just there last night and can't wait to go back again on the Saturday of Thanksgiving week-end for my parents 66th wedding anniversary dinner!!

“The Lawrence Welk of restaurants”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

For all the raves about the chicken, I expected something with very special seasoning, a real experience. Like at least one other reviewer wrote, it was bland. But the old people who like bland food love it. No wine, no beer. Just a plain ole family dinner. Just like Mom fixed in the 60's before we could get fresh vegetables year round. Plain iceberg lettuce, canned corn, etc. I can't figure why anyone not taking old people out thinks this is a great place to go, but it is obviously very popular.
