“Very good, unique pizza”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2007

I've visited two Bazbeaux locations -- Broad Ripple and Carmel -- a few times and at first glace, they look like any other pizzeria: noisy, fun, a little funky.

But what sets Bazbeaux apart is the creativity of their pizzas. Yes, you can get a sausage-and-mushroom-with-red-sauce if that's what you want -- and it'll be good! -- but if you want to push the envelope and get something a little more creative, that's where they really shine.

I especially like the store in Carmel. It's in the middle of the city's quaint downtown, and outdoor seating right on the Monon Trail makes it a delight for a summer evening's repast.

Enjoy!

“Best Pizza In The City”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2007

Bazbeaux is classic roman-style pizza. Thin crispy crust with light, flavorpacked toppings just the way they serve it in Rome and most of Central Italy.

They now have three restaurants, the original in Broad Ripple (just off the canal), one on in the midst of the fantastically popular/increasingly hip Mass Avenue district, and in Carmel's Art District (right at the intersection of Main Street and the Monon biking/walking/jogging trail). The Carmel and Mass Avenue restaurants are smaller and usually pretty packed. The Mass Avenue store will take sit-down orders in the evening, but is mainly a lunch joint serving by-the-slice to an impressive line of hungry downtown office workers; don't be intimidated by the line out the door - they move the line very well and you won't be rushed to finish your meal. At the Carmel restaurant, there is almost always at least a small wait in the evening, but the lunch crowd is not so heavy. The Broad Ripple restaurant is far larger, but still gets crowded at peak meal times.

Bazbeaux started as a little hole-in-the-wall joint just across the street from the current Broad Ripple location, serving "gourmet pizzas" (thin crust pizzas with unusual and high quality toppings). They were hugely popular, both due to the quality of their pizzas and due to their relatively small size (always jammed, always a "happenin' place"). After moving to their new, far larger digs they also expanded their menu to include a limited selection of non-pizza entrees, although pizza remains their clear emphasis.

The pizza sauces are not at all heavy, and never greasy. Their flavors are simple yet satisfying. They offer a wide variety of toppings, including the old gourmet toppings from the smaller store (pancetta, spanish ham, exotic cheeses, etc.). My favorite is their simple margherita pizza - brings back very fond memories of our time in Rome and Florence, where this is often served as a primi. Light, crispy, and clean flavors.

A wonderful place to sit, chat with friends, and eat great pizza. I believe all three stores serve beer & wine, and the Carmel and maybe Broad Ripple stores also serve mixed drinks.
