“Very unique”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2013

The food is original and unique. My husband's family is German and they love it. Try it for lunch and try new things. Many recommendations but the Frikadelle Rathskellers version of German hamburger is a favorite.

“Start to finish and all points in between were a treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

You start with the pretzels, you move to the ox-tail soup, then schnitzel with potato pancakes, and spetzel and you sit there saying wow. In between all that you pick from a variety of beer that makes you want to come back just to try more. Go with the big glass and you cannot go wrong. This is a place to go with business partners, customers, or your family.

“amazing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2013

Having traveled to Germany twice, wasn't sure how this would be but was i surprised! The pretzels and mustard were outstanding, soups delicious, etc. The building is old and restored with a great outdoor patio and live music. Truly took me back to Germany!

“Stunning building - good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

Indianapolis' oldest restaurant looks the part. The Athenaeum/YMCA/Rathskellar is a breathtakingly large establishment located in the Northeast restaurant section of Indianapolis. The regal brick building, circa 1880's, was the German social center of the city that has undergone many changes over the years. The Rathskellar restaurant is located in the basement of the building much to my surpise. I opened the large wooden door not quite knowing what to expect. I entered a small lobby with steps up to a door that was locked and steps down to a door I hoped was the restaurant. Sure enough, opening the second door revealed a large segmented but cavernous restaurant area with a polished wood dance floor and stage off to the right and a large wood and brick Kellerbar straight ahead complete with a moosehead and various German artifacts and flags on the wall. Ja, muss dies der Rathskellar sein!
It was Monday evening, just after the NCAA basketball tournament left town. Downtime for sure as there were not many people eating dinner. I bellied up to the bar and the affable bartender handed me a menu and I order a liter of Paulander Pils. The meal began with a super Deutsch pretzel and Senf mustard that came with a warning and definitely shivered my timbers. A terrific salad and Yellowfina tuna with brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes followed. I even splurged and ordered a Schwartzwalder Kirschtorte (Black Forest cake) for dessert. The cake was perfect but the cherry filling off to the side was certainly not traditional and somewhat of a turnoff. Being of German descent, I had to check out the place while I was in town for business. I am not a fan of traditional German food however so I cannot comment on the menu. What I had was good and the selection of beer on tap and in the bottle was tremendous. And the place certainly looks the part. I would love to come back during the summer months and check out the outdoor Biergarten that was still in winter hibernation.

“Overbooked”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2013 via mobile

It was memorial day weekend and the whole city is crazy but we were seated in what seemed like a hallway to beer garden. One in our party of six was bumped every time someone walked behind him. There was also a wedding reception in the next room. That being said the food was very good and plentiful. Our server was knowledgeable on all items. We all enjoyed selections of German draft beer and the atmosphere was authentic. I would love to go again when there is no holiday crowds.
