Owner description: Crown Hill is the nation's 3rd largest non-government cemetery with 555 acres of beautiful rolling hills. Located across the street from the Indianapolis Museum of Art, thousands visit this urban oasis to enjoy its peaceful beauty; study the architecture, sculptures and trees; exercise; picnic; view the wildlife (including a herd of white-tailed deer), and to study the history and heritage of the 200,000+ people buried there. A "must see" highlight is a visit to the top of "The Crown," the highest hill in the county, which affords a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire Indianapolis skyline. Note: the white line painted on the roads connects both gates via the "scenic route," including Pres. Harrison's memorial, the "Crown," National Cemetery, Gothic Chapel (1875), Waiting Station and 34th Street Gothic gate (both 1885). Crown Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Notables include President Benjamin Harrison, poet James Whitcomb Riley, Col. Eli Lilly, three U.S. Vice Presidents, and numerous others, including the infamous bank robber John Dillinger. Crown Hill's popular guided tours were twice named "The Best Walking Tour" by Indianapolis Monthly magazine, featured as one of Midwest Living Magazine's "Terrific Tours," and listed as one of "5 Things to Do in Indy Before You Die" by the Indianapolis Star. Visitors can attend one of many guided Public Tours (most scheduled to see the sunset), or schedule their own Private Group Tour. Pick-up a new Visitor's Guide Map at the Waiting Station building inside the 34th St. gate (3400 Boulevard Place). For more info on their national award-winning coffee table book titled "Crown Hill: History, Spirit, Sanctuary," guided tours, historical info, tree maps, etc., please visit the Crown Hill Heritage Foundation online.

“VISIT THE WEIRD IN INDIANAPOLIS”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

This is the highest point in Indianapolis. There are some interesting people buried here; such as various United States Vice Presidents, John Dillinger, James whitcomb Rileyand others. It is one of the largest cemeteries in our country. Some of the the tombstones are very interesting. And, if you're lucky, you might see some of the deer who frequent this cemetery. They have high six foot fences which the deer manage to jump over when they're hungry.

“Great place to visit, even if not for a service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

This is a destination, not just a cemetery. The grounds are simply beautiful. If you are near, don't miss it. Many famous people are buried here as well.

“What visit a cemetery??? Why???”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

This is one of my favorite places to go in Indianapolis---I know, I'm strange:) Most people don't realize the highest point of Marion County is in Crown Hill. There is so much history in the cemetery. There are tours available and I've heard they are excellent and add a lot of value to the visit. I personally had someone with me who had all of the info about the cemetery. Even if you don't take an official tour, it is a beautiful and calm place to visit and truly different than the average place to tour:)

“A great walking experience.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

The grounds are kept in prestine conditions. It was fun to wonder among the graves of famous people. John Dillinger is just one of the better know personalities burried there.
