We have been patrons of this establishment for years. Run by a "Mom and Pop"- and probably their sons, this restaurant actually was closed for a while a short time ago while the developer made the corner of Smith Valley Road and US Highway 31 into a "strip mall" type of property.
Egg Roll Number 1 has the expected Chinese fare, and their lunch special menu is extensive (as well as being VERY reasonable.) Their prices do rise slightly after the lunch special hours are over (and it is later after lunch when this happens!), but the quantity also increases so you still get a great deal.
We have had what we feel is THE BEST IN INDIANAPOLIS for Chinese food:
1) Hot & Sour soup- not the brown gummy stuff that you find in almost every other Chinese restaurant in the world, but this one is actually in a pork base. Light, tasty- get it with the cut scallions on top!
2) Crab Rangoon- we don't know if this is an appetizer, an entree, or a desert. It's that good.
3) Whenever we have illness in the family (colds, stomach upset, etc.) we go to Egg Roll Number 1 to get their egg drop soup. These folks know that to make a good egg drop soup, you have to patiently, but almost continually, stir the egg when adding. This stuff is silky and wonderful.
Last, the small (about 8 tables, no kidding!) restaurant has the kindest, most friendly owners- "Mom and POP" pretty much run the front of the house.
You will find that at almost any time of day there is a small queue waiting for these great meals- either for "eat-in" or "take out."
This is worth finding! We did not mark this restaurant on the scale of "atmosphere" because after you sit down and begin eating, you will not care about ambiance.
Really good food, great prices, phenomenal service..
Also, you will not find this restaurant open on Sundays.
