“A long, long drive but great once you get there”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

Planned a fall golf getaway, went south from Chicago figuring on better chance of good weather. Once we passed Bloomington Indiana, where our daughter went to school, it was one lane and construction, over 6 hour drive....ugh. We stayed at West Baden, beautiful atrium, place was deserted. Room was very nice, wonderful bed, two showers, double sink, but......was only partially furnished??????? Spacious but no place to sit????? First night ate at Pete Dye Golf Course, just what we wanted. Checked out Casino at sister hotel. Very good. Shuttles to everywhere, drivers and staff extremely friendly.

Tuesday morning called for tee time...Main golf course closed for the week because they had a LPGA tournament the week before.....did I mention this was a golf getaway. 2nd course, off Site, was golf cart path only, impossible for a senior who can't walk. Ok, that left the 9 hole golf academy, HA, closed all morning for their weekly Senior Shuffle. Reserved a 1:30, oh well, go with the flow.

That left us with the morning in the town of French Lick, only attraction: The Museum. Sigh, the curator was once again very , very nice and informative and we did enjoy the circus display. Finally got on golf course, golfed well, then toured the French Lick resort, made dinner reservation at steak restaurant. Nice dinner, only one other couple in restaurant.

Advice: don't make the trip from Chicago. If you live in Louisville, maybe but keep in mind this resort is in the middle of nowhere.

The rooms of this great old hotel have been very nicely refurbished. There had been attempts in the past to accomplish this but, none as successful as the current setup. While the rooms are old, all the amenities are up to date and nice. Staff very friendly and helpful. I was given a tip at the front desk to try the restaurant at the Donald Ross golf course which, turned out to be a great experience.

Attached is our email to the West Baden after they requested our comments after a stay in August. I sent the email with no response. Sent the email again a week later. Again no response. Why ask for your opinion when the hotel management apparently could care less?
This is our 3d time staying at the West Baden. This time we had our two adult sons (18) and (23) with us in another room. Our 18 year old is going to college and we wanted a short getaway. The hotel is beautiful, rooms great, housekeeping good, front desk fine. The major problem we had was the food. We ate at night at the Ballards bar in the dome. We all ordered different food and I ordered the Pizza with chicken added. Our food arrived a little longer than it should have (40 Minutes). The pizza did not have the chicken on it. It was sent back. The kitchen brought the same pizza back after about 15 minutes with chicken added and covered in cheese. It was obvious that it had been simply placed in the microwave. I tried it and it tasted like a warmed over pizza. I then ordered a bowl of soup thinking it would not take long. After another 25 minutes the soup arrived. The soup was very good but by that time our kids had left as we had been there 1 and ½ hours. The manager was very apologetic and took 30% off the bill. My wife and I chalked it up to a bad night in the kitchen. The next morning we ordered room service for breakfast. The food was excellent and service prompt. Unfortunately left off was a side order as well as fruit with the continental. I called and the left off items were brought. For such an excellent property the food service needs improvement.

This is a "Grand" hotel in all aspects. It is truly a very beautiful historical site. Everything is huge, landscaping, rooms, etc. It looks like a mansion or castle with a wraparound verandah. The décor is vintage and relaxing. I loved the large room and unbelievable large bath. Bed very comfortable, big fluffy towels. The property was very, very clean. Staff very friendly and attentive. It is easy to get lost making your way around inside. Room numbers by wing and floor. Elevators are spaced. It is a long walk down those halls. Casino is connected, but a long walk through the walkway. My only problem would be the long walk to and from room and Casino. Spring #8 bar/deli was nice with free popcorn and a limited menu near indoor and outdoor pools.. Buffet breakfast and lunch ok at Colonnade.

Room Tip: Request a room close to front of hotel. Very long corridors, long walk.

I spent a weekend here for a girfriends birthday celebration. The renovation is stunning and the rooms are nicely renovated. Yes, the rooms may be a bit small but there is no reason to dwell in your room at this resort. We enjoyed a spa day, a day by the pool and an evening out for dinner. The live music everywhere was a pleasant surprise. Sitting and rocking on the massive from porch with a glass of wine which a piano was playing was pure heaven for us. French Lick is a step back in time. We enjoyed our stay.

Our first visit was last weekend. Love the layout of both properties (West Baden). Great architecture and history.

Friendly and helpful staff. Our entire party commented time and again how impressed we were.

Convenient shuttles that take you to either property or up to Hagen's restaurant (located at a high end golf course about a couple miles away). All shuttles free.

Spent time at a craft fair going on across the street. Walked the town and checked out different shops. Hit the winery for a couple bottles.

Food choices were limited on site.

Really enjoyed a relaxed weekend. 2 days here was plenty, but I would definitely go back.

After a very bad experience in Nashville Indiana (though no fault of that adorable little town) we were looking forward to our visit to French Lick though with some trepidation. I had always kind of imagined this grand old resort as a museum with crusty old people lining up for dinner. Oh my was I pleasantly surprised.

Yes there is quite a bit of age in the old lady yet she still stands strong. From the grand lobby to the understated room all was really perfect. We could have spent days just sitting in the many crooks and crannies on the well appointed furniture just marveling at the architecture.

The food options are somewhat limited but still fine. We ate at Hagens and had a very nice meal. The Power Plant and the breakfast buffet at the Colonades were also very good. Maybe not unbelievably great but certainly more than serviceable.

I suppose there is a price to pay for all this amazing restoration and that would be the slot machines at the casino. Shew those things are tight. Way tighter than Las Vegas.

You would be a fool not to take one of the free shuttles to West Baden to see that amazing place as well.

All in all what a great honeymoon! I wish we had had the time to spend more time there.
