This [place was the worst place ever. Delapidated kitchen old worn smelly cabinets. stinky carpet. hard squeaky matresses. In its day it was probably a nice place but it is oVER THE HIHLL.. Needs complete renovation from top to bottom. From my viewpoint nobody is buying so theres no money to work with however they just put a beautiful swimming pool they just put in. Whats with that?? They need to update the units...We had a bad leak while we were there . It was around the fireplace. After the water leaked in the whole unit smelled like a swamp. We will NEVER go there again. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone....

Room Tip: nothing to add. Horrible place

We were in a two bedroom two bath plus loft unit. The unit was spacious and clean, with a huge well equipped kitchen and a good sized living and dining area, half of which was two story - lots of natural light. And decks off the dining area and upstairs, off the loft. The small exercise room and nice pool and hot tub are at the top of the hill, a short uphill hike from our unit but impossible for most people in lower units down the hill who drove, not walked to it. The town is at the base of the hill, so we drove (not walked) to it. We saw some deer and turkeys; the woods around the townhouse rows were very nice. Weather the first week of September was wonderful.

Most of the units in our section (near the top of the hill) were 2 story. The layout was odd, with the large bath and lovely huge hot tub downstairs, but both bedrooms and the loft with sleeper sofa were upstairs with a small, very basic bath. Inconvenient arrangement trying to get moving in the morning or readying for bed, with someone always having to toss on a robe and run downstairs to use the 2nd bath. And the parking lot was 1.5 stories above the units, with lots of irregular shaped concrete steps - a pain to get luggage or groceries up and down to.
The beds in the 2nd bedroom were hard; the sleeper sofa was VERY uncomfortable, we had to provide a 3" foam pad to make sleeping there possible. And the loft is open to the hall connecting the other 2 small bedrooms, so no privacy - a curtain to pull closed would have been nice! The rest of the furniture was OK, but getting tired.
Lots of the timeshare units were for sale.

We were at French Lick Villas for a week in the middle of August. Check in was easy and after a concern of the many steps we might have to carry luggage we found out we were in an A unit in Bldg 22 -which was the first floor and we had just a few steps from our car directly into the unit! A very easy move in. We ate at 33 Brick St. for burgers the first night and since it was a 1/2 hour wait we ate at the bar(2 of us) which worked out fine. Ate there again for their Rib special ($9.99) on Tuesday. Over all - ok food, friendly and close to the villas. On Saturday we had breakfast at the Rowboat- a nice down home meal in a diner type restaurant. We visited Jasper on Saturday-there is a farm market, a few shops on the square and walked a little on their riverwalk.

We had a patio for our unit and we had a resident groundhog, 2 racoons, and a little bunny around. We also saw deer and wild turkey on the property. The unit was fine, a little dated in decor, but everything worked and it contained a flat screen tv. We had hopes of watching the Reds baseball games, but the station carried the St. Louis games, not Cincinnati- French Lick is 150 miles from Cincy and on eastern time- St. Louis is 235 miles from FL and on central time- didn't really make sense.

Southern Indiana is electronically challenged. If you don't have Verizon phone service your cell may not work, GPS will do strange things- so says the Villa tour director and don't even try to get wi-fi in your unit (a charge of $15 for the week)- it probably won't work. In the office there is a computer that can be used to check email and your tablets will get wi-fi in the conference room there so there is somewhere you can get information.

There is a nice little church- Our Lady of the Springs right next door with masses on Saturday and Sunday-we attended the 11am and it was very nice. One day we drove to Ferdinand by way of Huntingtonberg (a few little shops and a nice restaurant for lunch- Fat and Sassy) to take a tour of the Monastery Immaculate Conception which was exceptionally nice. It is a free one hour tour and history given by one of the nuns. The monastery houses 160 St. Benedictine nuns and the trip to see it is well worth it.

We also went on the boat ride offered at the Villas(be sure to go to the Monday 10 am get together to learn about the area- there is no sales pitch to buy a time share, and you can sign up for the boat ride, etc.) The boat ride was on Wed from 9:30-11:30 on Patoka Lake and the cost is $12 per adult, $6-Child, plus $5 fee for instate cars, $7 for out of state cars to get into the park. There is a guide while the ride goes on and was very pleasant.

One of the reasons we went to French Lick for a week is because we enjoy casinos and the one at the resort is smallish but very nice. We did leave some money behind but not all that we had budgeted for that and we had fun there.

Some other notes- a nice supermarket (JayC-you can use your Kroger card here) just down the road, Miquels Mexican restaurant in the same shopping center. This is THE shopping center, no outlet malls or big malls any where around.

All in all it was a very low keyed week and we may do it again sometime since it is only 3 1/2 hours from home. If you are not into casinos however three days might be enough time.

Room Tip: A units are probably all ground floor. However if you do a vacation exchange such as RCI on the comp...

We have a family reunion every year here over the Christmas holidays and it is absolutely one of my favoritist things to look forward to each year! Its SO beautifully lit in the area, and SO magical for my kids (and I) at Christmas. We visit French Lick hotel (Ms. Claus reads stories and Santa visits with kids, and the decor is awesome, West BAden is beautiful with carolers, Polar Express activities are free for kids even when not riding train-(we dawn their pjs and wave to the riders-the kids look fwd to it), great pool at the villas for the kiddos, and there's a kinda holiday bussle in the air with lots and lots of families hanging out in the main hotel playing board games-i wish everyday could be like this!!!. We split up during the day and the women head to the winery for fudge and wine, the men have had some beautiful golf days in late Nov and rave about the wildlife sightings. The h.s. cousins always do bowling an spend the day making fun of each other and catching up, and down the road for go carts or laser tag. The little ones swim and do christmas activites/dvds. My kids call French Lick "Christmas Town" and this year they will meet their Elf on the Shelf there for the first time ;). "Santas reindeer" are ALL over the grounds at night with racks on their heads and everything, sometimes right outside your patio or on your sidewalk. You have to have some grace and almost a sense of humor on the datedness of the rooms-I always feel like we need to go to Paoli to round out the Hot tub time machine atmosphere and the hilarious video rental 80s style-i love the hilarity of this, it really adds to my experience! IT's clean and villas are large enough that 18 ppl can sit around comfortably playing interactive board games-loudly w/ no complaints from neighbors, some of the guys just hang with beers in front of the sports channels while the littlest kids play with toys on the foot table. The young adults like the large tubs and saunas are relaxing. Order some Chicagos Pizza and bring some holiday games and let the magical experience begin for your family.

My family stays here in early January whenever we go ski at Paoli Peaks. The room accommodations are exceptional with easy access to the Harrah's Casino just a mile away. Larry Bird Blvd is just a few miles away. The town has lots of history and the Casino has even gotten friendlier with better comps and payouts.

while the villas were spacious and the furniture had been upgraded, there were several issues that presented problems during our stay. While they say they have wi-fi, it can't really be connected in most of the units, even for the fee they wanted, due to poor signal strength. They also claimed to have bar-b-ques, but those don't exist either...just jen-air units in the kitchen...not our idea for grilling ribs, etc. The kitchens were very sparsely supplied, esp if you are cooking for more than 4 people. If you are planning to cook, bring sharp knives, a large bowl and a large pot. There is no mid-week cleaning and no restocking of supplies, so bring dish soap, laundry supplies, t.p., etc, because the stingy amount supplied won't get you far. the flatscreen t.v. in our unit was mounted at a slant, so you had to tilt your head to watch t.v.!!Really!

Room Tip: If you want easy access to the French Lick hotel and casino, units in buildings 1-4 are right there...

We typically travel as a multi-generational family ranging in ages from 6-70 yrs. Our immediate family had the two bedroom unit and my parents rented the one bedroom. We found the room incredibly spacious and clean. They supplied ample towels and bedding. All the appliances were in good working condition. The Villas location itself if great and provided a good 'base' for day trips to places such as Holiday World and Marengo Cave. The new recreation area with pool and workout room was very nice. The biggest bonus however was the fact you can you use the facilities at the French Lick Resort just down the hill. The kids quickly became bored with the Villas pool and we spent the remainder of our 'pool time' at the resort. It was nice to have the option for poolside drinks and meals.

Other reviews have noted the dated décor so I won't spend time discussing it. To the Villas defense, it's no easy task to update dozens of units so my review doesn't reflect this. Our biggest complaint was Wi-Fi. Our Villa simply couldn't receive the signal so our devices were unable to find a portal. I confirmed this with Helix Technologies (the Villas' provider). In today's world this was unacceptable, especially since they say you can get Wi-Fi for $15/week, a price we were willing to pay. My husband had to spend one evening (at 10:30 PM) in the French Lick Resort parking lot just to get Wi-Fi to download information for a conference call the next day.

We are used to pulling information off the web to plan our day on vacation including getting directions, purchasing tickets and choosing activities. Using the one office computer for this was not a viable option (you must sign up for 1/2 hr. increments and only when the office is open). This coupled with my husband's absolute need to have Wi-Fi for business purposes put a damper on things. We could access Wi-Fi from my parents' unit up the hill, but again, not a viable option. Unlike changing the décor of units, making Wi-Fi available to all units is a relatively simple fix and if the Villas want to stay relevant to today's families, a must!

The other simple fix is to replace the decorative artificial plants in the units. Our artificial tree was missing 1/3 of its' leaves, the artificial plant in the downstairs bathroom was dirty, old and tired looking. If they make the 'easy' fixes it would help ease the dated look.

Just a note to people that there are an incredible amount of steps and getting from building to building may require a car. There is nothing that can be done about this obviously, but something to think about if you are traveling with older people or those with disabilities.

The question that makes a review, in my opinion, is 'would you stay there again'. My answer completely depends on the Villas response to my review (submitted to them). If they make the necessary Wi-Fi changes and the 'easy' décor changes my answer would be yes. If they ignore the needs and wants of their guests, my answer would be no. There are other option in the area for families.

Room Tip: If you want Wi-Fi, get a unit higher up on the hill
