My friend and I randomly selected Granite City for our lunch because it was new to us. We were pleasantly surprised. We split an order of fettuccini and a cheeseburger with fries. The waitress offered to divide the order in the kitchen.
When the waitress delivered our food about 30 minutes later, its presentation was especially nice and the serving sizes were generous. Our food was delicious, if a little on the cool side, and the cheeseburger was cooked exactly to our specifications. We asked that the BBQ sauce be served on the side because we wanted to try it before we smothered our burger with it.
The waitress was friendly and knowledgeable, she was able to answer several of our questions about the background of the restaurant (its part of a chain out of St. Cloud, Minnesota) and the people we saw out the window traveling back and four with brown glass jugs she called growlers. (Reportedly, a full growler of brew--2 quarts--is purchased for about $31.00 and can be refilled repeatedly for less than $7.00. The brew is made on the premises and the vats can be viewed through glass windows.) She also knew about the unusual, but tasty, flavor of the BBQ sauce that she said was made with coffee beans.
Another surprising feature of our visit with the ticket price, only $7.34 for each of us. For the quality and quantity of our food, that seemed like a real deal. Then just before we left, the smiling man who we saw several times walking back and forth from the kitchen and talking to some of the other customers, came to our table and introduced himself as the manager. He wanted to know if we had enjoyed our dining experience and his question seemed sincere rather than cursory.
We told him honestly that our food was a bit on the cool side and he accepted the criticism graciously. Overall, our experience was very good and I certainly will revisit Granite City on my next trip to Ft. Wayne.
