The Inn at Irwin Gardens is the former home of the family that founded Cummins Engine, and did they ever live in style! This gorgeous B&B has most if not all of the home's original furnishings, and one can imagine that one is a house guest at the turn of the 20th century.
The property includes a beautiful formal garden, formerly open to the public but now reserved for the pleasure of the guests.

The house is immaculately clean, the beds and bedding are super-comfortable. The hosts are friendly but not intrusive, and the breakfast was delicious. All in all, a wonderful place to stay.

This is an incredible mansion with beautiful gardens. The oak woodwork throughout the house, but particularly the entrance hall and front stairs, is impressive. The main floor public rooms (like the library, sitting rooms, and dining room) are large and uncluttered. The bedrooms and sitting rooms for the suites are also large by any standard.

We stayed in the elegant Elsie Sweeney room. The room had a king-size bed and a sofa. The bedding was first class. We had a great night's sleep on a good mattress. There was no inside noise or outside noise to disturb our sleep. It was absolutely quiet. The shower curtain (in a tub) was slightly claustrophobic. The built-in dresser and closet in the bathroom are nicer than anything I've ever seen.

Breakfast was excellent. The time for breakfast was flexible.

The hosts were friendly and very knowledgeable of the Columbus, IN, area. They suggested a good restaurant and an incredible, old-style ice cream parlor in town. We got a tour and the history of the house.

The gardens are very nice. Some of the fountains and basins are being repaired, but the total effect is still great. The garden had a special European feel.

The art museum is next door and is worth a look. The house is also close to some of the churches and other buildings built by world famous architects (whose fees were funded by the mansion's original family).

With numerous one-way streets and some streets that dead end unexpectedly, in-car navigation was helpful to get to the house.

The mansion was more impressive than the website photos led me to believe. I often find B&B's and other attractions that don't quite measure up to their photos; this time I was positively surprised. The next time I get to Indiana I would like to stay here again to check out the books and try another room.

For history buffs, the origin of the Cummins diesel engine is tied to this property and the original family.

We spent a night at the recently opened Inn at Irwin Gardens in Columbus Indiana a week ago. It could not have been more perfect. Just to see the house is a fabulous experience with so many original furnishings and the gorgeous gardens. But at the same time it was wonderfully comfortable with great central air, plenty of hot water and charming hosts and a delicious breakfast. In this setting this is not your ordinary B&B and should not be missed. Also the town of Columbus with all the world famous architecture was a treat to see.

We thought this was very clean, service was friendly, and the best part was how amazingly preserved this historic house is. A lot of the furniture is original to the single-family owners of 150 years, which made it even more special. The best part was access to the European-style gardens, which were fun to walk around and sit in during sunset. The owners were so nice and made us comfortable. Bed was very comfortable. The shower in the third floor suite was AWESOME! We don't think the website pics do the rooms justice. Breakfast was delicious (we had eggs benedict and fruit with granola and yogurt.)

I grew up in Columbus, and this house was inhabited by members of the famous Irwin family, so it wasn't open to the public. Coming home for a visit, it was really special to be inside and see how beautiful and extravagant everything is.

Columbus, IN is known for its architecture, and this inn was right next to the visitor's center, which is handy. We could also walk to a few nice resturants for dinner. We would really recommend this inn, especially to anyone who appreciates history and historic architecture; this one is amazing. No complaints at all.
