At Home In The Woods Bed And Breakfast
Ranked #1 of 3 Chesterton B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 18, 2013

At Home in the Woods was the perfect way to start off our month-long honeymoon roadtrip. Scott was an excellent host (after reading the other reviews, I'm disappointed we didn't get to meet his wife Victoria). Having a dessert for us each night was such a nice touch, and they were delicious! As the other reviewers mentioned, there was less boundary between innkeeper and guest then I am used to, but at no point during our stay did it feel intrusive. We stayed in the Smokey Mountain room and it was excellent, I loved being able to walk out our door and go into the hot tub. Having the game room and DVD library was a nice touch. The setting is beautiful, you really do feel like you are out in the middle of the woods, I'm disappointed we didn't get to take advantage of the hiking trail. Breakfast each morning was delicious, we loved sitting with Scott and hearing all of his traveling stories, we also really appreciated the time he took to show us around the house, print out a train schedule so we didn't have to drive into Chicago, and the burger place he recommended, Octave Grill, was excellent! Don't let the small amount of reviews dissuade you, this place is worthy of 5+++ stars! Thank you again for such a wonderful stay Scott. We will return!!

Room Tip: Smokey Mountain room was great, as we could walk right out our door into the hot tub.

At Home in the Woods was even lovelier than I expected. The setting is idyllic - landscaped grounds/gardens plus woods. We were sorry to not be able to walk the trails because the bugs were so prevalent & the heat oppressive. However, Victoria made us feel quite at home. The evening dessert in addition to the fabulous morning breakfast was terrific. I made good use of all the teas that were available since I had a cold. There was a television in our room which I didn't expect from the description. Victoria was very accomodating with all our requests. She even called ahead to the restaurant we wanted to go to.

Just had my second stay to At Home in the Woods and enjoyed it as much or more than on my first visit. Lovely hosts Charlotte and Scott are very welcoming but not intrusive. Their breakfast is great and they will accommodate individual requests and diet sensitivities. I had a wonderful time chatting with Scott about the birds visiting their feeders outside the dining room window. The birds are amazing and Scott can identify them which adds to the enjoyment. This time I stayed in a smaller room but it was equally as comfortable as my previous visit. The hot tub is really wonderful -- be sure to bring a bathing suit (although they have some modestly priced ones on sale). If you are looking for peace and quiet about an hour from Chicago, and a place from which to hike in the Indiana Dunes, At Home in the Woods is the place for you.

This was an excellent spot for a night away from the city and from the stresses of life. The B&B is very integrated into the home itself, so there are very few boundaries between guess and keeper. We were happy to spend a very long breakfast (that tasted great) chatting with Scott and Victoria about their experiences and trading stories. The room was just the right size and beautifully decorated. Every detail is well done and staying here is a delight. Highly recommended and we will be going back.

Room Tip: The Rocky Mountain room is very nice with a good sized hot tub.

I was a bit unsure about choosing a B&B as a place for a family getaway but I was convinced by the rave reviews on TripAdvisor which made it sound like just what we were looking for. We were not disappointed.

What makes this an outstanding place to stay, worthy of 5 stars, is the beautiful, quiet location and the great care and attention to detail which Scott and Victoria put into running this very comfortable B&B. They seem to think of everything and go out of their way to make guests feel welcome.

They are an ideal couple. Scott is a do-it-yourself handy person who does most of the building work, while Victoria is an excellent cook and homemaker who also has a demanding job outside the home.

An outstanding feature of At Home in the Woods is the 5 acre wood which is full of birdsong. There are also 2 decks, a pool in summer, a large and pretty garden with a firepit (which we lit to cook smores), a room for games of which there are a large variety, etc. Bird tables are situated strategically for easy watching of the large variety of species which inhabit the woods and garden.

Other people have mentioned the wonderful breakfasts and they are truly sumptuous and delicious. We couldn't take full advantage of them as we just couldn't eat so much, but we were able to take the muffins with us to add to our lunch.

My husband and I arrived first with our eldest daughter. She had the Rocky Mountain Room while we had the Grand Canyon Room. Our room was a bit small and dark but it was nonetheless very comfortable and all we needed as we spent most of our time out of doors. Our daughter's American husband arrived 2 days later and they loved their room, especially the whirlpool bath.

Our youngest daughter arrived very late on our last day after a fraught journey from Shanghai, without her suitcase as the airline had lost it. Scott and Victoria were expecting a very tired traveller and lit the fire in her room. It's little touches like that which make this place special. They also had a spare toothbrush for her. She was able to freshen up her clothes in the steam shower and dry them in front of the fire. After a good night's sleep and an excellent breakfast, she was all set to go the next day.

One of the best features of this place is also one of its drawbacks. It's in a rural location a few miles outside of Chesterton and the local taxi drivers had trouble finding it, even with the aid of GPS. The name of the road is North 350 East. https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en
Our youngest daughter, who took a taxi from O'Hare, Chicago, had to read the taxi driver's GPS and direct him or he would never have found it.

My husband and I live in the UK, but our daughter and son-in-law live in Chicago and are already talking about going back for a weekend break. It's only about an hour's drive away for them.

Workaholics would appreciate also the fast and reliable free wi-fi. (It was a lot faster than in our Chicago hotel.)

In short, At Home in the Woods has everything you need to refresh yourself after a hard week's grind in the city. That said, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with mobility problems and it's probably not the best place for very young children either.

Room Tip: The Grand Canyon room is the smallest and cheapest but it's fine if you're going to spend mo...

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a great, detailed review. We appreciate that you chose us to host your family get together. I trust your first smore prepared on the camp fire next to the pond was enjoyable. We are currently working on a solution to bring more light into the Grand Canyon room. Thanks for your input.

Our 1st B&B and we enjoyed it, even though we had only one night in the area. Victoria & Scott were very warm and inviting. We recommend it. Loved the private steam shower. Breakfast was great, Victoria loves to cook special things...great looking table setting too. We had a very nice morning conversation with the other guest at breakfast.

Victoria arranged for a pastor.....had the perfect spot picked out in their beautiful back yard!!! Scott took pictures and made a CD of our beginning together!!....just for us!!! They even had flower peddles laying all over the bedroom floor and bed!!! Victoria even made a special plaque for us to hang honoring the moment that we will cherish forever!!!
