Charlestown State Park

Attraction details
Owner description: Charlestown State Park was established in 1995. The park's 5,118 acres include 4,756 acres transferred from the U.S. Army and 362 acres purchased from private owners. Charlestown State Park is remarkable for its varied topography from gently rolling highlands to its heavily wooded steep ravines. Rock outcroppings, scenic Fourteenmile Creek, and high quality woodlands make this an important addition to the state park system. The park offers rich habitat for both plants and animals. Several rare and endangered plant species as well as numerous areas displaying abundant high quality wildflowers complement diverse animal life found here.

Great time again... Thanks to a great staff... Camp ground is in great condition. Close to home but yet so far away!

We're from northern Indiana...we found Charlestown a couple of years ago and love this park.

It is not a crazy busy park like some of the northern ones and has a lot to offer.

It has full hookup sites if you so desire for longer stays as well as 50 amps of service and the lots are all very nice and level with nice grass and paved pads.

There are great hikes on property as well as lots to do in the neighboring areas including Louisville...one of our favorite tours is the Louisville bat factory tour...both our teenaged daughters loved it along with both of us...and neither girl is into baseball or softball either they just enjoyed the tour!

The park itself is very nice...you won't be disappointed!

We were looking to go camping with our young children somewhere close to Louisville and I had heard good things about it. We did the ranger led tour of rosé island which was great. Very informative and they drive you up and down the huge hill that leads down to it. The campsite was a little bit expensive but the facilities were great and there weren't many people there at all

This park has a lot to offer if you take time to explore it. Many excellent hiking trails, easy to difficult. I took a guided tour of Rose Island and found it fascinating! The tour times and dates are listed on the website for Indiana's DNR.

The early death of their property manager was surely a setback for Charlestown but is no excuse for the ongoing problems. New trails are poorly designed and overall development seems haphazard. The Army may be releasing property to them faster than they can develop a use plan, but that plan should have in place at the outset. Charlestown has amazing terrain and features, with Fourteen Mile Creek, dense woods, a nature preserve, rock outcroppings, and long Ohio River frontage. Too bad the experience is so poorly realized.
