“Not the best stay”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

Room was quite small but comfortable. Internet was expensive but free wifi in some public areas. Reception staff friendly and helpful. Housemaids and breakfast waitresses were "just doing their jobs" and never smiled. Actually seemed as if we were inconveniencing them or intruding. Not made welcome at all. Grounds were quite pretty. Nice walk down to the harbour. Expensive drink prices but you get little snacks with your beer or little bikkies with your coffee, that is when you managed to get someone to actually take your order.. Hard to get a hot coffee here as it was always barely warm. Breakfast did not have a huge variety. Free shuttle bus provided is a great place to get up to the main areas. Exhorbitant mini bar prices. Go out of the building, turn right and go around the block to a fantastic little kiosk where you can buy water and snacks etc even a hienikken beer for one tenth of the price. Also on the same street is Alkiones a traditional Music Tavern. The food and hospitality is so amazing and delicious and home made. Best place to eat in Athens and so cheap!!!!. We did eat one meal in the restaurant in the hotel and it was lovely but expensive and they pour water before you realise you are paying big bucks for the water!. I suggest you eat outside of the hotel, especially at Alkiones, visit the kiosk, catch the shuttle bus and you will be better off. Hope the staff cheer up.

This hotel was selected by the conference that my friend was a speaker at, so I didn't have a say in the selection. I am so incredibly pleased with my stay that I promised myself to make this review (so pleased in fact that this has forced me to write my first review on tripadvisor) so that others that do have a say and are researching can know. First, this is a rather "posh" style hotel and you feel it as soon as you arrive to the perfectly spotless exterior that welcomes your arrival. The modern wood planks that surround the exterior was freshly stained and the bell staff was more than welcoming. Upon entering the open loby is filled with natural light from the outside sitting area that has a floor to ceiling glass wall. Very clean and excellent free wireless access... speaking of free, everything in this hotel (from their nightly rates to the exquisite dining selections) are reasonably priced. An examble is at one of their two fine dining restaurants offers an extremely large Greek salad for 12 euros, a glass of white wine for 3 euros and exceptional breakfast buffet and another restaurant with a well known French chef (didn't know the name, but you knew it was someone experienced... in fact the staff said something about him winning some major "iron chef" type contest). The rooftop pool offers a jumbo spacious sitting area, showers, bar and of course the pool with spectacular views of Athens. The gym has a full service selection of equipment, showers, water & Gatorade, music, sauna, Tv and a spa service. They also offer free shuttle (you could walk if you really wanted...) to the major shopping, dining, social area called Planka. This service is provided hourly without the need of a reservation. Needless to say, I would highly recommend this property if you have an interest in Athens. So incredibly easy to get and enjoy. Most staff speaks perfect English and they have a sister hotel in Thessaloniki that is suppose to be amazing... heading there next! I hope this helps someone.

Room was on the small side but nice. Good shower. We were there for a conference and that was convenient. Hotel is a bit far from the center of town but it was convenient that there was a free hotel shuttle bus to use. I would have liked the shuttle bus to have run later on Saturday and Sunday, especially Saturday evening. The rooftop pool area was very nice with great views. The outdoor lobby area was pretty with its fountains and comfortable seating. We were told that the lobby restaurant was open 24 hours but when we went down to eat something at 1 am, we were told the only thing available was a toasted ham and cheese sandwich! Therefore we went out and found a nice local restaurant in the area. Breakfast had a lot of choices, nice pastries, yogurt, etc but the eggs were only so so and the bacon was not crisp. We didn't realize that the nuts, fruit and bottles of wine and water were complimentary until we asked. We had thought it was just part of the take and pay mini-bar. Overall it was an okay hotel.

Location , parking, reastaurant , clean , good service , rooms are ok, you get used to it and you have no reason to go anywhere else.
You are close to the centre and you can move easily ( not the rash hour) to other parts where there is night life.
The hotel provides conventional facilities and nearly every day hosts workshops or similar themes.

Quickly to the pros:
- Nice position: right next to the sea, a few minutes by bus to the center. Thus excellent choice for tourism.
- Reasonable price: I was surprised by the high prices other hotels asked for and therefore chose this one for my business.
- Professional service: They know how to run a hotel in every single aspect. Bravo to all the staff!
- Excellent restaurant: Really really good, menu prepared by Michel Roux, nicely prepared and served food!

Now the cons:
- Worn out. Needs a restoration, walls, tables, bathroom look over-used... Do not misunderstand the message here, everything was really clean and I mean it, I cannot stay in a place not carefully dusted during the day....
- Roof restaurant closed: It must be a fabulous spot with excellent view to the sea but, unfortunately, closed.
- Ridiculously expensive minibar: I made the mistake to take a small bottle of water off the minibar and had to pay 4,5 E for it!!!!!!!!! It is cheaper to call a taxi, go to the next utility shop, buy the bottle and get back to your room. so this is an important warning: DO NOT TOUCH the minibar in the rooms, you are going to regret it.

Dear traveler3149,

We sincerely appreciate your time taken to offer us your feedback from your recent stay at the Metropolitan Hotel.

We were pleased to note that you enjoyed your visit, the services provided, the location and your meal at our new Avenue Bistro Restaurant & Bar. Your kind comments will be shared with my colleagues. Regarding your comments about the room’s condition, our engineering department takes care of all the necessary work. Carpeting, walls and anything needs to be restored or reconstructed is in our daily agenda.

Our roof top bar – restaurant “La Veranda” operates May to October (subject to weather conditions). I hope that you will have the opportunity to enjoy it on one of your future visits. With reference the mini bar prices it is always an issue of concern and we regularly carry out a competitive market analysis with other hotels however we are taking your comments under serious consideration.

THANK YOU for staying with us, we are looking forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Yours Sincerely,

I have stayed here many times, but will not stay again as I have found a better hotel which is much cheaper (see my reviews). The pool is very small. You have a good view from the rooftop bar but it is never open when I visit. Room is clean but can smell of cigarette smoke. Mini bar expensive. Food expensive. Food OK. Service OK but impossible to get an iron in your room. I always take a travel iron as they can never provide one. You will need to take a cab everywhere. Nowhere within walking distance, no decent restaurants nearby. You cannot open the windows because the road noise is too loud. Nice outdoor area with water feature to enjoy a coffee.

Approx 45Euros from the airport.

Dear Farfalla B,

Thank you very much for selecting the Metropolitan Hotel Athens and we appreciate the time taken to write for your experience at the TripAdvisor.

The fact that you found the hotel clean is an award for our housekeeping team, as far as your comment about the smell the Metropolitan Hotel Athens offers a choice of smoking & non smoking rooms I would like to assure you that we will be even more strict on that. Cause of our central location, in order to provide the most comfortable stay to our guests the hotel rooms are protected with triple glassed windows.
“La Veranda” roof top bar-restaurant this year opens late May. Should you decide to visit Athens again this month please feel free to visit it, concerning prices, even though we are trying to be in the same line with the competition, we are taking your comments under serious consideration. A few steps away from our outdoor area that you enjoyed there is our newest outlet, “Avenue Bistro”, a project by world – renowned chef Michel Roux, additionally within a walking distance from the hotel’s main entrance you will find some of the most well known fish taverns of Athens. However we assure you that all your points are notified and will be discussed in our head’s of departments meeting.
Should you decide to visit Athens again please visit our site for the best available rates for the room that matches your needs.

We regret we didn’t meet your expectations. Should you decide to visit Athens again we will appreciate it if we have a second opportunity to offer you our hospitality services.

Yours Sincerely,

For a business hotel I was not that impressed with the service levels. One morning at breakfast there was no hot food available and there seemed to be no attempt in 25 minutes I was in the restaurant to replenish the stocks. The rooms are looking a bit tired and the beds are okay, but not great. The looby area and outside area were nice.

Dear Mr. Martintwigg,

We deeply appreciate the time taken to share your experience with us. We welcome every comment as a tool to work with in order to improve our services and facilities.
It is with a great pleasure to know that you enjoy our public areas and the garden. The unlike event you experience during your breakfast it’s something that I personally will make sure that will not happen again. In our continuous efforts for the best we just opened in our premises a new restaurant. “Avenue bistro” offers a relaxed lunch & dinner setting with a classic French bistro menu designed by world renowned chef Michel Roux and this is only the first implementation of many of our future plans.
Thank you for staying with us. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Metropolitan Hotel Athens.
