I just spent a weekend at the Grant Street Inn. It was my sorority reunion, and the staff could not have been more accommodating. They made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in the door. The Inn itself is just lovely. Our room was in the original inn, beautifully appointed, comfy king size bed and a nicely sized room. The breakfast was wonderful, fresh quiche, eggs, grits, home made breakfast breads...really well-done. The location is also excellent, you can walk everywhere. The newer rooms were also really well-done, also very big, with king sized beds and pullout couches. This is really a great place to stay, and not too expensive for what you get.

The main house is lovely. The porch divine. The breakfast was phenomenal. The room we stayed in was appointed well - nice furnishings, high ceilings. (The mattress while comfortable is already sinking, a ridge starting to appear in the middle - but didn't impact sleep.)

So why the "poor" indication? It's for value. The new buildings are very very cheaply constructed. They look great, but the walls are paper thin. Not only did the student party outside keep us awake until 4am, but when the very nice family next door talked, we could hear every word - and they were not being unreasonable. Net, the sleep was horrible, and for what we paid (over $300 for one night), even with all the nice parts it does not make up for not getting a basic night's sleep. Clearly the inn owners cannot control parties, but they should not charge those rates for a cheaply constructed building that does not help shield that noise.

I may consider staying here again if in the main house and if during a weeknight, but definitely not on a weekend and not in one of the newer buildings.

Room Tip: Main building only - but I didn't actually stay there so cannot guarantee that they are better.

We are pleased that you enjoy the Grant Street Inn but are sad that you had an unpleasant stay in our newest building. All feedback is important to us as we had not yet been made aware that the soundproofing between rooms in this building was an issue. Our new expansion is so often requested by guests, especially regular corporate travelers, and others were not making us aware of any noise problems. It is something we take seriously though and do not want guests not getting a good night's sleep. We appreciate your understanding that living in a college town brings its share of student parties. Luckily, the weekends from late August to mid November tend to be noisiest during football season and Fall events but does certainly quiet down during other seasons. Please come visit us during a more peaceful season and we would love to have you stay in the original and historic portion of the Grant Street Inn.

I stayed here for one night during a visit to Indiana University. I wish that all small hotels could be like this. This place is charming, well-appointed, friendly and well located. The rooms are all different, but very tastefully furnished. The beds are high off the ground and very comfortable. The breakfast was uncomplicated but sufficient. If you are a cat-lover and happen to meet the resident black three-legged cat, you are in for a treat. I'll definitely return.

Rooms vary a great deal as to size and amenities so be sure and check. Breakfast is VERY good and I would give a 5 overall if there was a pay-as-you-check-out fridge with beer/wine in the breakfast room. Service is very attentive and the bigger rooms are great.

I couldn't get a reservation at the popular hotel on campus The Biddle, so someone gave me this name as it was in a residential area near my daughter's new house. However it is just a few blocks away from some nice restaurants as well, and not more than 10-15 minutes from all kinds of large stores. There are many rooms and each one is different.
They bent over backwards to be helpful. Since the room I chose by picture on their website wasn't ready, they gave me a suite for $20 extra: large bed, HD TV, A/C, terrific buffet breakfast, they got me ice cubes, changed my card key over and over and have parking. Plus a workout room with 2 treadmills. I just loved it.

Room Tip: For a few dollars extra, I'd go for a mini or regular suite. Also I'd avoid rooms facing the...

We stayed for the weekend during a basketball weekend at Indiana University. The location of this inn is perfect as you are in walking distance to the university, downtown shopping, and great restaurants and bars. We stayed in the main house. It was beautifully restored and maintained. The room was smaller than what you would have at a standard hotel, however, the charm of the room more than makes up for the lack of space. The breakfast buffet they serve in the morning is wonderful. We will definitely be staying here again on our next trip to Bloomington.

I am not a B&B fan but for what the GSI is it's okay. Rooms are all different, some in the main building, some in a separate house. You can pick and choose from their website. I'm not sure it is handicap accessible so the stairs outside and to diningroom may be an issue.

Positives:
Very nicely decorated
Bed very comfortable, sheets smooth and spotless, lots of pillows.
Room & bath very clean, plenty of towels, soaps, etc
Room large, desk area, extra chairs
Breakfast buffet fine, one special can be cooked to order
Lots of hot water
Within walking distance to restaurants
Not too far from IU

Not so great:
Had to drag my suitcase up several steps to enter the reception area
Lighting kind of dark, could use brighter spot lighting
Tiny bathroom, stall shower only, sink outside the bathroom, very noisy shower door
No heat/air control in the room; must be controlled centrally
TV stuck on a shelf way up in a high corner, hard to watch.
Walls are paper thin and there are gaps around room door, so you can hear a pin drop-- Absolutely no privacy. Every sound can be heard from and in your room, especially if you are off the lobby (conversations, phone riniging, water running, breakfast prepared, cars parking.)
Fireplace not wood-burning, clerk did not know how to turn it on
No fitness center

Room Tip: Search website to see individual rooms and to find out which building/floor they are in
