This was a wonderful, rather magical experience. We've lived within an hour of Goose Pond and had never been. David led us on a four-hour guided tour (3-7) pm that began with a closeup sighting of a huge bald eagle in her nest, and ended with an entrancing experience of four or five short-eared owls fluttering and diving (hunting) in a field in front of us. We saw 33 bird species in all: majestic flights of sandhill cranes flying over us; many species of ducks; a number of different hawks; and most spectacular, a pair of 5' tall Whooping Cranes. (Also one sweet muskrat.)
We followed David in two cars with walkie talkies to a series of stops where we'd all look with binoculars and David would also set up powerful sighting telescopes that would yield very sharp closeup images (and you can actually take decent phone images from the telescopes). It was a gorgeous, crisp early Spring day and it was fantastic to be out there experiencing all of this. David is both a genial and friendly guide & super-knowledgable; with his explanations, what would at first just look like "another hawk/ duck" would turn out to be fascinating to learn about.
We ended up with 7 in our group b/c a couple friends joined; probably it's best to keep it to two cars following David's (but once the pandemic lifts, I think some could travel in his vehicle).
Took a private tour with David. He’s incredible. I could have never known where to go in Goose Pond.
Excellent birding trip in Southern Indiana, with sightings of at least 37 different species, some very rare. David is extremely knowledgeable about where to see the birds and about their habits. His enthusiasm for the experience was catching. He organized the details, equipment, field guides, timing and other logistics very well.
David was very knowledgeable, from a quick kayak lesson to turtles, birding, history of the lake and woods, to tree identification from leaf colors. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours in nature. Wish we lived closer to take other tours led by David.
This was my first kayak tour so I really didn't know what to expect. And I have to say that it turned out to be a really great first time experience! The weather tried to be threatening but we managed to avoid getting wet. David is a very knowledgeable birder and pointed out the different ones that he would see. I highly recommend going on a tour with him.
Our family of four (including an 11 year old and a 14 year old) went on a private kayak tour at Lake Monroe. (We met David at the Pine Grove State Recreation Area.) It was an amazing experience!
David was easy to communicate with and provided everything needed (including binoculars)- we just had to show up. The cost was very reasonable. We did not have previous kayaking experience- David gave us a quick lesson and we were ready to go- even our 11 year old had no problems with it.
We saw many birds, including a roseate spoonbill that we were hoping to see, an eagle, herons, egrets and indigo buntings, kingfishers and many others. We also saw deer and beavers. David was extremely knowledgeable and easy to talk with. He answered all of our questions and provided a lot of interesting information.
My son and husband are much more into birds than my daughter and me- but we all loved the tour. If you are a birder, this is a fantastic experience. However, even if you are not a birder but just enjoy spending time in nature, you will love this tour. Our family is planning to do it again and also to take tours of other areas in Indiana with David. Just go- you will not regret it!
