This is a great place to eat in downtown Bloomington. I always eat here when in town and Samira's has always been excellent. This is my parents' favorite place to eat and quickly becoming one of mine in Bloomington.

We ate for the fourth time (over about ten years) at this elegant restaurant located on the square across from the historic courthouse in Bloomington. Two things especially recommend Samira: the outstanding service and the excellent, unique food. We made reservations (helpful on weekends, when there is often a wait). The restaurant is shotgun-style, with tables lined up on both sides and the middle. There's a partition in the front, behind which is the maitre d' station, but there are two tables on the street side of the partition of you want a window view of the square (beware that on very cold nights, the air from the front door opening and closing sweeps into that area). We ordered a mix of vegetarian and meat sambosas, similar to Indian samosas but with an entirely different--wonderful--flavor. The dish came with two dipping sauces, one red (spicy) and one green (slightly less spicy), and a salad of chopped tomatoes, cilantro, onions, and other ingredients. Entrees come with a soup or salad--we all ordered the lentil soup, which was beautifully flavored and hearty. Two people in our party ordered pallao, which is flavored basmati rice and your choice of various ingredients, somewhat like a Pakistani byriani but again with entirely different, unique spices and flavors. The other two ordered manto and aushak, dumplings with various kinds of fillings and sauces (for example, the vegetable aushak are "steamed dumplings filled with cabbage, onion, and cliantro in home-made vegetable tomato sauce and spiced yogurt, around seasoned basmati rice"). There are also ground beef and lamb options. On other visits, we've had skewers of lamb, chicken, or beef which come prepared on little swords. There's a decent and very reasonably priced wine list (we had a really nice bottle of Australian Shiraz for $20). Our waiter, an Afghani gentleman, provided the kind of service only found among trained waitstaff and usually in very high-end restaurants or other countries. One example: to check whether everything was OK at our table, instead of interrupting our conversation, he caught my eye and gave me a questioning thumbs-up, to which I discretely responded with a nod. The rest of the staff were equally friendly and helpful. Every time we're in Bloomington, dining at Samira is the highlight of our stay, and I would highly recommend it for an elegant and unique but not overly expensive meal.

Very pleased about the dinner experience I had at Samira's. The food was wonderful! I ordered the lamb kebaab and couldn't have been happier with the choice. The lamb was very tender and well-seasoned. The bread, soup, and side dishes (rice and vegetables) were delicious as well. My friends got the chicken kebaab, which also looked great. I definitely plan on returning!

This is usually not the type of restaurant we would go to (we normally are not this adventurous); but it was recommended to us, so we thought we would give it a try. It was absolutely delicious. They started you off with pita bread and a sample of eggplant seasoned in something--mmm good. We had the Samorok Lawang as our appetizer and the beef kebaab for our entrée. Everything was very tasty. YUM! We thought it was very reasonably priced for the amount of food you got.

Incredible food, top-notch. The bread was good, the tasting portion of eggplant we were served was fantastic, the soup was good, and the entrees were amazing! The service was also very good. Very highly recommended.
