We stopped in the court house while touring around the square area. The court house is beautiful--murals, stained glass dome, interesting history markers etc. It's still very much a working county building which adds to it's charm. I would definitely suggest taking some time to explore the courthouse (take the elevator to 3rd level for best viewing) and park around it.

By and far the best time to visit is during the holidays. From the giant tree in the rotunda to the strings of lights that stretch from the roof to the surrounding buildings defiantly worth a visit.

Provides a beautiful setting in downtown Bloomington. Excellent Christmas light display. Useful for local business but also acquaints a visitor with the downtown experience.

Downtown Bloomington is totally worth parking your car and going for a walk around the shops, down to the library, and onto campus. Bloomington and the IU campus merge together from the Courthouse to Sample Gates. The Courthouse itself is old-school Midwest, with the building in the middle of a literal town square, which is surrounded by shops and restaurants. So many town squares have fallen into neglect, but the proximity to campus and the library has made this square flourish. Make sure you step inside and look up, there are beautiful painting and stained glass that you'd never expect when looking from the outside! Also, on the day after Thanksgiving every year hundreds of people gather on the lawn to watch the "Canopy of Lights" be lit up by the arrival of Santa Claus. There's music, hot cocoa, caroling, and lots of old fashioned community spirit. For a town a large as Bloomington it's quite a feat to pull of something so small town feeling. The lights are strung from the courthouse to the surrounding buildings, so if you drive around the square you are driving under the canopy.

While it's not necessarily my go-to place when I walk downtown (it's largely for length purposes that I walk that far), I always loved the Christmas lights they'd put there every year. I remember my mom and I driving around the city to see them for several years, and now I'm trying to start a tradition of seeing them. I've never been able to see them at the actual ceremony but hopefully one day I will.
