The beach is rough rock and smaller ground down rocks at the edge of the water. The water was very cold even in late june. But the kids took a quick swim in it. We just walked along the shore. The rough nature of the rock made for tender feet.

Up, away from the water, there was nice sand and a beach volley ball net.

The rest rooms were block houses over a five foot hole in the groung. One step above an out house...

Free and better than nothing, we used it to kill some time that we had extra during trip.

It's Lake Michigan so the water is too cold and iffy on eColi levels, but since it is free, pretty good place to sunbathe (biting flies are a problem so bring your Avon)

Yuch! This place is a great concept, a resort right on Lake Michigan in Illinois at the Wisconsin border. But is a SAD looking facility!

If the heat is too much for you in the summer, think about escaping to the beach to enjoy the refreshing breeze of the lake. There is a South Unit of the park (entrance at Wadsworth and Sheridan roads) and a North Unit (entrance a couple of blocks north of Route 173 and Sheridan Road). The southern beach is also home to the Illinois Beach State Park resort and a campground. The northern beach is next to the North Point Marina. Parking is generally not a problem, although a really hot weekend day gets pretty busy.

There are trails that lead away from the beach and give you the opportunity to take in some of the grounds. The beaches are typically clean and it is a safe, family place.

For those who live in Chicago, there is not much nature around except for Starved Rock in Ottawa and Illinois Beach State Park. Both of these places are my favorite when it comes to a quick gateway. Illinois beach state park is located about 30 miles north of Chicago. The park has two lodging options - campground and a resort, both located on the Lake Michigan beach. Interestingly enough, the beach of the resort used to be covered with tiny rocks. I went there a few days ago and to my surprise the beach is now covered with sand - great!!!! Water is crystal clear and pretty warm in the middle of the summer. There are lots of hiking trails. The campground is pretty kids friendly. I have camped there in the winter with my friends and in the summer with my family. Both seasons are great to visit.
