This a a gorgeous facility with outstanding grounds. The lakefront across the street makes visiting the temple worth the trip.

If you like unusual architecture, houses of worship, etc., this is a must-see attraction in the Chicago area. One of only seven Baha'i Temples in the world, it's the only one in North America. It's relatively easy to get to. It's a 10-minute walk from the end of the Purple Line. The building is very unique: a nine-sided temple with a unifying dome. The building looks carved from stone but is in fact made from cast concrete with inlaid quartz stone. The outside is decorated with religious symbols. The interior encourages meditation. It has no representative imagery, just intertwining abstract shapes up the dome. The temple is surrounded by gardens and fountains, although our visit was prior to any blooms appearing in the spring, so the grounds were rather bare. A visitors' center is below the temple and explains the construction of the temple and the basics of the Baha'i faith, which was educational. They are in the process of building a larger visitors' center on the edge of the grounds, but it looked like it was a ways from completion.

The Baha'i House of Worship on Lake Michigan just north of Chicago is amazing place. I discovered it by accident on a trip to Chicago when I was 18 and have been trying to come at least once a year ever since. It's open to people of all faiths (and no faith) to think, meditate, pray, walk through the gardens and fountains. Highly recommended.

The only reason I did not give the temple a higher rating is that I felt that the landscaping could have been better and I felt that the place didn't make me feel included in any way with the beliefs they are supporting. They do little to share much with visitors even though they have a captive ( almost) audience.
