On the grounds of the former McCormick (Chicago Tribune) family property, the gardens, and museums of Cantigny are a great way to spend a morning or afternoon; make sure to bring a camera. The lovely gardens, some of which change seasonally, are easily accessed from the parking area. The museums and tank park, with about a dozen tanks that you can climb on, focus on WW II and the McCormick family. There is a picnic area with some equipment for kids as well as food for sale in the Visitor Center. There are also seasonal events so check their calendar before you make the trip. Parking is $5/car. Admission is free

If you are ever in the Chicago area, and are looking for an economical and lovely retreat to nature, visit Cantigni Park in Wheaton, Illinois. It is only 35 miles west of Chicago, and it is "free" to visit. The only charge is a $5.00 parking fee, but if you are a veteran, you can apply for a veteran's card, and even the parking is "free". The veteran's card also gives you a 10% discount at the restaurant and shop on the property.

We visited the park last week, and the fall foilage was spectacular. The park was the property of Colonel Robert R. McCormick, a great patriot, and the founder of the Chicago Tribune. Cantigni Park includes a formal garden area and the McCormick House which provides guided tours throughout the day. For you history buffs, there is also a military museum on the property which has displays and information on World War I through the Gulf War. It is not an extensive museum, but it is tastefully done none-the-less. There is also a rather extensive display of tanks near the military museum. Oh yes, did I mention that the house tour and military museum are also "free".

For you guys who would prefer not to visit the park with the Mrs. and like to see your fall foilage while hitting a little white ball, there is also a 27 hole golf course on the property. Unfortunately guys, the golf is not free. After her four hours of touring the gardens and your four hours of golfing, you can meet for lunch at either a restaurant in the park or at the golf course.

If you plan on visiting, I would suggest that you visit the website first, because their hours vary at differnt times of the year.

Get a season pass and come here for the most beautiful walks you can take all summer. Or make it a grand day out, at $5 for the average car to park you have access to a mansion tour, war musuem, an array of army tanks for kids to scramble over. Lovely greens, amazing gardens, the roses in June are glorious and fragrant!

I dont know how I missed this place in the last 5 yrs, we went this summer and had a family picnic with few more friends and their kids. They have beautiful grounds decorated with rare flowers and trees, army tanks for children to climb on, water fountain for them to run around and lots of lawn area to sit and eat. We also toured the rose garden and the innovative vegetable and flower garden. This is a must see for families with kids.

I thought it was a great deal. Just $5 parking fee. It has lots of room to wander and explore through the grounds and parks. Also, there's a free museum there with a lot of WWI information, which is something that we don't always learn about. I thought it was fascinating. I guess the guy who owned it fought in WWI.
