Food was excellent. Steak and Jail Ale pie really hit the spot but not too filling or soggy. Vegetables were very fresh and perfectly cooked. Others ate the plaice, fillet of pork and belly pork which were all gorgeous too. We all opted for the sticky toffee pudding which was light in texture and totally scrummy. It came with local ice cream but we asked if there was any chance if custard and mine arrived with a dainty little jug if freshly made custard even though custard was nowhere on the menu. I know its a bit pleb by but I like custard and the staff were not at all snooty about it. Give this place a visit. It really is great and you won't be disappointed.

We have stayed many times over the years but not been back for a while, selected our favourite room and had a lovely surprise; it had been redone to boutique standard with a lovely bathroom complete with free standing bath and separate power shower. The welcome was as friendly as before and the staff efficient and polite, there is also a small guest lounge tucked away in a cosey area and the breakfast room is sunny and airy. The food is very good, wine is a little expensive but overall it is a fine dining experience and not pub grub and therefore value for money.

Room Tip: Top floor,Freebooters has a huge bed, large bathroom and a window overlooking the front, mind the beam...

Its been a while since we stayed, but just as good as I remember, in fact, better! Electric shower in bathroom! Great food reasonably priced and very well cooked, wine a little on the expensive side but good quality. Excellent friendly service.

Room Tip: Tipperary Tim right at the top of the hotel is great, very comfortable!

We visited on the first Sunday of our hols as the rock inn was a stones throw from our holiday cottage. I prebooked Sunday Luncheon and the booking process was efficient.
The actual dining room that we sat in was very quiet and old fashioned, but I did see that their were other rooms.
Staff were friendly and polite.
I felt that the portions were a little undersized for the price although the beef was very tasty.
We shared a dish of veg between 4 of us which resulted in very little veg each. We enjoyed dessert, there's a great selection of freshly made puddings.
In my opinion this is not a country pub that knocks up a roast and a pint every Sunday and rolls you out the door! This is a dining establishment that offers a fine selection of wines and ales to compliment the a la carte food.
It's a shame that the rock inn didn't supply the food or atmosphere that we wanted for a young family as the location was fab for us, but it always seemed busy so they must be doing something right!!

Thank you for your review and feedback and we are glad you enjoyed your lunch with us. During the booking process we do usually ask if children are in the dining party and seat you in the appropriate room. I’m sorry this didn’t appear to happen with your email correspondence which meant that by the time you arrived you were sat in a more ‘grown up’ dining room as all other space was reserved. Having said that the young man you had with you was very well behaved but we are sorry if this made you less comfortable than you might have otherwise been. With regards to the portion size, our focus is more on quality than quantity but our staff are trained to return to customers during the meal and if more vegetables are requested this is not a problem. We do hope that the points you raise would not deter you from returning on you next visit to the area.

We have been to the rock three times this year for evening meals we live locally and have
recommended you many times but after last nights meal I will not be recommending you again The food we had was well presented but my Wife's crab starter was tasteless and very sloppy .I had the Lamb rump it was very bland and tough and tasted of liver . The rock inn was a great place for special meals out together, but it looks like we will have to find somewhere else !

We were recommended this restaurant by the owners if the apartment we were staying in, and we were not disappointed. Very characteristic building with loads of separate dining rooms. We sat in the conservatory area which was lovely and light. The food was wonderful, the freshest mussels ever, beautiful scallops and then followed by superb duck and lamb. Would not hesitate to visit again, and would definitely recommend.

We stayed at The Rock for 2nights at the end of July. Lovely attic room with a huge bathroom.
The setting is lovely, coast one way, dramatic Dartmoor the other. The first evening we walked the old tramway from the doorstep. The following day we walked across the moor to Widecombe. We spent Sunday on the coast. All was pretty good. No complaints about our room or service, both great. Breakfasts were very good indeed and the pub garden is really pretty. Of two nights dining, the first was really poor and the second, very good. A pity, considering the cost, however I would definitely go again.

Room Tip: Ask for the attic.
