Owner description: A romantic house and gallery set in beautiful riverside gardens. Ancient trees, bubbling brooks and rolling lawns frame this lovely old house. Crafted from a medieval priory, it is full of surprises, with art that intrigues and delights. Come back throughout the year to see different exhibitions in the gallery. Carpets of spring bulbs, a stunning walled rose garden, rich autumn leaves and a colourful winter garden make Mottisfont a feast for the senses all year round. There's space to run, jump and play, and always something for families to do.

“Beautiful”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

We spent the day at Mottisfont with our 2 children. There was so much to do. Whilst looking around the house the children could search for hidden little crocodiles. The walled garden was amazing. So many flowers. There were lots of climbing trees and a beautiful walk next to the stream with a little play area. We would defiantly return.

“Lovely Day Out”
Reviewed May 29, 2014

I went mainly to visit the walled garden which is looking and smelling beautiful. Serious rose lovers would do well to wait a couple of weeks before visiting when there will be more flowers in bloom. The house is interesting as a large family home with unusual origins, not especially beautiful or grand. There is a fine Bechstein grand piano in the Whistler room which visitors are invited to play. Lunch was good and reasonably priced. The home made cakes were very tempting.

“Lovely visit on a dull day!”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

This NT house and garden is up to the usual high standard. The house has an amazingly long history, but sadly no longer has any family furniture. Other pieces have been brought in. The gardens are magnificent and full of colour and roses at this time of year. The rivet walk is beautifully peaceful. The cafe is pleasant and spacious. No oudoor seating or picnicking on this rainy day! But lots for sunny weather. The nearby village can also be visited. Lovely NT shop.
We always make NT visits a priority when touring around; our membership has been well worthwhile.

“A rose a rose my kingdom for a rose”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Well if you love roses then there is no better place imaginable to see them and smell them in all their glory. The gardens at Mottisfont are enough in themselves but then you have the wonderful house and grounds and the marvel of the chalk steam and the beautiful trout therein. Lots to do and see and marvellous walks along the river and in the grounds. The catering is in my experience a problem area and the cafe tends on busy days to have long queues and the food could be so much better and more imaginative - shame but there you go - I suggest you bring a picnic and go on a glorious day and you are sure to enjoy.

“Cheered up a rainy Bank Holiday”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

As NT members we try and visit as many new places during the course of the year as possible and passing by on our way home from a weekend away visited Mottisfont. Enjoyed firstly and informative 40 minute walk around the grounds with a guide which I always feel enhances the visit to any NT property. Left then to our own devices we enjoyed the rose garden, albeit in the rain, so less enjoyable than it could have been! We also loved the riverside walk and heard for the first time in many years the cuckoo! The house was ok but being one of the NT properties where sadly it didn't come with much in the way of original furniture, it perhaps wasn't one of the best we've ever looked around although we found the Whistler room very impressive. Of course where it fails in original furnishings the NT try hard to enhance your visit by exhibitions on the upper floor. The only slight niggle would be we didn't like the look of the cafe, which understandably on a wet day was heaving and the fact mentioned by another reviewer given there were lots of visitors it wasn't great that only one of the three ladies toilets by the cafe was working - not really good enough over a busy BH weekend but these things happen. Would certainly love to visit again in the height of summer when I am sure the gardens are even more glorious.

Thank you for your review.

We are really pleased that you enjoyed your visit to Mottisfont. Our outdoor guides are very knowledgeable and these tours really can enhance a visit - so I will pass your lovely comments on to them.

Unfortunately we did experience problems with our toilets on that day, but this was only temporary and the problem has now been rectified.

We hope to welcome you back to Mottisfont soon.
