“Fab garden, but the catering .....!”

Owner description: A romantic house and gallery set in beautiful riverside gardens. Ancient trees, bubbling brooks and rolling lawns frame this lovely old house. Crafted from a medieval priory, it is full of surprises, with art that intrigues and delights. Come back throughout the year to see different exhibitions in the gallery. Carpets of spring bulbs, a stunning walled rose garden, rich autumn leaves and a colourful winter garden make Mottisfont a feast for the senses all year round. There's space to run, jump and play, and always something for families to do.
Useful Information: Food available for purchase, Bathroom facilities

Lovely setting and the walled garden fabulous, however in need of some TLC. They seem to have got the catering very wrong. For example, very ordinary looking cakes and scones and long queues for the drinks. They are missing an opportunity to do something very special here, preferring instead to churn out mediocre food. The "booth" in the rose garden was inadequate and would be improved with a proper catering outlet taking advantage of the superb vista. My real gripe with the National Trust is that they don't make it clear that a "standard" non gift aided entrance fee is available - they just go ahead and charge the £1.25 per person EXTRA without a asking which you would like. Nice day out though, the house doesn't contain any original furniture and what there is is quite lacklustre, but it's an interesting place which could be much, better.

Both of these attractions are within the admission price to the Abbey and its grounds.
Whoever devises the EXPOTITION around the grounds is a genius.
You get to: sit on Pooh's seat to contemplate the clouds; find the tracks of a Woozle; take a few moments in Pooh's Thotful Place; search for the North Pole; see a Heffalump trap; a whole load more. It really is a fabulous fun way to explore the grounds for all ages and there is a helpful map and activity sheet to help the younger ones find their way around.
The only word for the EXHIBITION of the coloured drawings is ENCHANTING. They are all coloured versions of the original ink sketches and were done by Sheperd in 1970 when he was 91!

Mottisfont is well worth a visit, with a beautiful house and grounds. However if you are visiting on a glorious summers day BRING A PICNIC. The cafe is chaotic and clearly unprepared for the success that it is getting and the queues are monumental. Much more relaxing to take your own sandwiches and lazily watch the trout in the stream.

Delayed our visit by a few weeks and it was worth the wait. The rose garden show must be one of the best this year. Should last another couple of weeks as some roses were still in bud. Recommended.
