“Great family vacation”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

From a local customer: Cabin was very nice (small problem with cleanliness in one bathroom). Waterpark was fun. Small but perfect size for kids to be able to explore. Kids loved train as a form of transportation. We used a free cabin certificate provided at a fundraiser, so price was perfect. Beds were very hard, but overall we would totally go back.

Room Tip: Cabins were nice. Our neighbors were horrible but not really the hotels fault.

The location to Starved Rock was perfect. It was a great break from hiking for the family. Grand Bear has both a small waterpark and an amusement park with zipline, climbing wall, bounce houses and more. My daughters are 9 and 6 and they had a blast. It was a nice surprise that the amusement park was also included with the room. We had breakfast in the morning which was a very reasonably price buffet - it was small, but it was priced appropriately. Overall, good location, clean, and fun for the family. We would stay there again.

We stayed one night on our way to Chicago. The Lodge and rooms are very clean (but please upgrade cable to include disney/jr). The waterpark was small but a lot of fun. The lifegaurds didn't seem too attentive/interested in their jobs. Only saw one guy asking kids to get out of the hot tub once. Most of the time it was filled with kids despite signs everywhere. We ate at the restaurant onsite and it wasn't very good, but the staff were all nice and was reasonably priced. Overall a good stay and will return.

Friendly staff overall good stay. Was disappointed there were not amusement part rides that were advertised on website. But there were a lot of fun act. Front desk staff very helpful. Restaraunt was little pricy but ice cream place was very reasonable.

Room Tip: Villa or cabins are much nicer than lodge. If you have several people going defiantly go villa.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your current stay. I am pleased to hear that the staff exceeded your expectations throughout your stay. I would agree the villas are wonderful and a nice place for larger groups to enjoy their stay. Our amusement park recently underwent renovations replacing the older amusement park rides with more interactive activities for the children including a super slide, a ropes course, a rock wall, a euro bungy, and some inflatable attractions currently come with the stay.

We stayed Sun to Mon, and the crowds were not bad at all. We arrived early and the room wasn't ready, which was fine. The kids changed and went into the water park and had a blast. After 2 hours we then were told our room was ready.

Room- Standard room with 2 queens, sleeper/sofa, table 2 chairs, fridge, micro, and older tv. It was clean. Only drawback was the whole area is well water and you get the well water smell from sink/shower. We have had experiences with well water smell before, so it didn't bother us. Hot water was plentiful, but not powerful. Wifi was non-exsistent in the room. Our room overlooked an area I assume WAS or IS going to be an outdoor pool. It was an empty area of dirt. It seemed to have access to the water park, so if they DO add an outdoor pool, that would be nice.

Water Park- Do NOT expect Wisconsin Dells size!!! Two slides, only one was operational. Nice sized lazy river, hot tub- not operational. Wave pool that cycled about every 15 min. The crowds were minimal so there was plenty of room for everyone in chairs and tables. Note: if your child cannot handle the waves, be next to them and not ignoring them while siting in a chair. One child on Monday had difficulty and the lifeguard had to stop the wave pool and snap into action. She did a wonderful job. But the parent didn't even seem phased. The guard supplied the child with a life-vest for the duration, which the parent took off and let the child back into the wave pool. REALLY?!?! The pool was open on Monday morning, but NO slides, waves, river action. I guess it's a cost saving measure on staff probably due to statistical crowds.

Game Room/Arcade across the lot. Eh. Ok, I guess. Did not eat at restaurant. Kids liked it of course.

This was a fun weekend getaway for my family to meet up at. I have 2 boys ages 6 and 3 who enjoyed the waterpark, arcade, and enchanted forest amusement park. My 3 year old wasn't tall enough for some rides at amusement park but he still had fun in the bouncy houses and big slide. Make sure kids have socks and shoes, no sandals for certain activities. One slide didn't work in the waterpark but that was not a big deal for us. However, the hot tub did not work on the Sunday we were there which was disappointing. Older children/teens may not get much out of this resort. Mini golf was a little pricey. My kids loved the bunk beds in our room. This resort had a lot of activities for kids at night and a movie and crafts. Breakfast was reasonably priced. Overall a fun weekend stay.

Room Tip: End of the hallway away from all the kid traffic coming back from pool.

Hello Valued Guest,

Thank you for your sincere comments of your recent stay with us at Grizzly Jack's Grand Bear Resort. We are pleased you and your family were satisfied with your stay. Unfortunately, there was a brief period in time when the hot tub was down for repair, but currently it is back up and running and we anticipate the waterslide being up and running early to mid-July. We look forward to offering more activities for children of all ages during our summer months and hopefully seeing you in the future.
