Windy City Express is a relative newcomer to town, and is a small regional chain taking the former location of a Wendy's hamburger place on the hard-to-see southeast corner of University and Race St., in Urbana. They've got daily specials that offer really great value. They have chicken fingers, Italian beef sandwiches, burgers, fries, okra, cheesesteak sandwiches, fried fish, Chicago style hot dogs, and more. The Italian beef sandwich is fantastic, containing about a half pound of thin-sliced, nicely seasoned beef--get it with cheese, and either dipped or with dip on the side. The cheesesteak sandwich was similarly delicious. The chicken fingers are large, meaty, a bit tough, but served with a choice of dipping sauce. The fries are served as a huge portion, lightly floured, crispy and dripping grease just the way you like it, and yet still taste of fresh potato. The specials come with fries and drink, and you will NOT leave hungry! Don't expect a fancy interior, but they do have a clean and spacious dining room. My only misgiving is that they offer no green vegetables and nothing that isn't laden with fat (except maybe the lean Italian beef), and as such you cannot find a balanced meal here. But give it a go once every 3-4 months and you'll be glad to look forward to it. I'd go much more frequently if they'd keep some frozen veggies in their freezer and just nuke a serving, maybe with a no-salt, no-butter herb sprinkle, as an alternative to the fries. It wouldn't kill them. And it won't be so lethal to the customers, either.
