The property is beautifully designed with its lagoon swim-up rooms and Port Stephens is an absolutely stunning part of the North Coast barely two hours' drive from Sydney. This hotel also has a good restaurant on-site with professional, proactive, friendly and helpful staff but that's where my priases stop.

Reception staff reminds me of that of an overworked public hospital.

Upon presenting ourselves at Reception at 12:30 pm, unfriendly receptionist defensively pointed out that our reservation confirmation clearly states check-in is 2:00 pm. We didn't even ask to be checked in early!

I have to say that we were given our room allocations shortly after 2 pm but a request for extra pillows resulted in extra pillow cases being delivered to our room. When my request was repeated to the supervisor, I was told that I would have to make do with whatever bedding that was in my room due to the individual ownership structure of each room and the supervisor does not have access to a store of extra bedding items. After a long conversation (during which I had to question the supervisor's willingness to provide service to guests), he reluctantly agreed to give us the extra pillows from unoccupied rooms. I have stayed at countless properties ranging from roadside motels to 6-star properties and I never had so much trouble getting a couple of extra pillows! Not even during an enforced stay at a public hospital!

I also observed signs of poor maintenance in this two-month-old property. In our room, one bedside lamp was missing and there was a 2cm burnt hole in our doona which was cleverly covered up by placing a sheet over the doona instead of under the doona!

Oh, don't expect an evenng turndown service with chocolate. Our room was finally made up at 5:30 pm the next day with just a quick change of towels. Making up the bed was apparently not part of the procedure

Chekc-out was efficient but less than friendly and I somehow missed the customery question "did you enjoy your stay with us?"

This property is rated 4.5 stars which is probably appropriate to the facilities and physical attributes of the hotel. All I can say is that the staff have a long way to go in customer service training to match the star rating.

Just got back from a long weekend in Port Stephens, staying at the Oaks Pacific Blue in Salamander Bay. Feeling totally relaxed and wondering how I can convince the landlord to put in a lagoon pool at my flat in Sydney!

The resort is not super close to the beach, but then Salamander Bay is a river beach, so we drove to Shoal Bay and Fingal anyway for a sandier experience (max 10 min drive).

The hotel was brand spanking new, decor very pretty. We were in a swimout studio room, which was much bigger than any hotel room I'd have expected, had such nice furniture and lots of pleasant extra touches including lovely soft minky blankets to wrap around you shoulders as you enjoy a bottle of wine out on the deck in the evening. Features: flat screen TV with a DVD/CD player, spotless throughout, neutral colours/brand new furniture, simple self-catering facilities (microwave, fridge, toaster, kettle) lets you bring some of your own food, pool was a major highlight.

Our deck was nice and big (swimout decks are bigger than upstairs balconies) and you can get straight into the lagoon pool from it, which was great. Bed was huge, although it was 2 singles pushed together rather than a double. If you can, ask for a room away from the restaurant, as it looked like it might be a little noisy at night for those apartments.

The restaurant is fine if you like buffets, although good food was a bit of a struggle all around Port Stephens. A tip: Michelangelos Trattoria in Shoal Bay does a good plate of pasta. Merrets at The Anchorage down the road had a nice (and ritzy) menu, but after being promised a table there it was taken away when we said we weren't staying there!

Anyway, the Oaks was a lovely place to stay. It was great for us as a young couple and also looked very good for families.

Had 4 nights at this magnificent new resort in October 2007 with our kids aged 14, 12 and 2. We stayed in a fantastically located 2 bedroom swimout apartment (number 176) which was positioned directly opposite the widest part of the pool and sandy beach area and adjacent to the restaurants and entertainment . Our room was sensational - spacious and modern with fully equiped kitchen, 2 bathrooms, spa, lounge room and outdoor deck area with direct access to the pool.
3 plasma TV's and 2 DVD players didn't hurt either - there's a Video Easy store and 10 pin bowling in the shopping centre directly across the road to keep the kids amused, as well as an aquatic centre with huge water slide located just around the corner.
The pool is absolutely fantastic - about 500 metres long and goes around the whole resort - it's dotted with hot spa's and shallow swimming areas - great for our 2 year old. The kids loved the novelty of being able to jump straight into the pool from the deck of our apartment. There's also another heated lap pool, sauna and gym. Make sure you bring your own rackets if you plan to use the tennis courts, as there is a charge to hire them.
This resort is great value and well worth a visit. We all had a fantastic relaxing time and have already rebooked for next year.

We just came back from Port Stephens. It's very beautiful there. We had lots of great activities. We enjoyed our 3 days trips but unfortunately we had very bad experience with 4.5 star hotel there. We already came late for the check in. The hotel check in supposed to be 2 pm....we arrived from sydney 4 pm, we came to the reception and greeted by moody unfriendly (that after while known as supervisor) staff who said that our room wasnt ready yet. i didnt realise the time until i checked my mobile phone and saw it's actually 4 pm
the 'supervisor'just asked us to sit down and wait 10 minutes, which we did it, and said she would let us know. when i realised the time 4 pm, i went to the reception again and asked what time actually the check in. and the other receptionist said 2 pm, so i asked how came this 4 pm and the room not ready, and you guys couldnt even do anything. (no complimentary drink either, just unfriendly service!!!)
she said she couldnt do anything and had to ask her supervisor.
anyway when the supervisor came back, she suddenly being nice to me and my fiancee(which was very annoying because she wasnt friendly before and just because the complaint she suddnely being friendly)
she asked whether she could help me, so i asked what time the chek in and she said 2pm, but because it's fully booked so they ran late for everything, and she at the end cheked whether the room ready (after almost 20 minutes)
and she didnt offer any complimentary drink or discount! that's very ashamed for 4.5 star hotel they couldnt offer us any complimentary drink or something (not that we want something free....but the customer service not good for 4.5 star)she said our rate already special.
anyway that's our first problem.when we arrived at the room, it's very lovely room, but unfortunately they didnt put the batteries in the remote control of the tv/air conditioner.
anyway the second day worst than the first day.
we came back from outdoor outing at 6pm, the room wasnt even ready.i went to the receptionist and asked this girl what time they usually clean the room, she siad in the morning. anyway to make it shorter the hotel not even have the feedback. it's so pity they couldnt give us great service (bad management) even though the room and the building itself it's very great. i just don't want others to have the same bad experience., it's better service they will get probably at 3 star motel.

An average hotel with not much local to it. If you are looking for a stop over on your route to or from Syndey, this is too much of a drive to make it worthwhile.
