We had a beautiful drive through farmland to get to Reynisdrangar. This site offers some really nice views of Dyrholaey and boasts some really cool caves as well.

I really liked the legend of the three pillars of rock protruding from the ocean. Apparently two giants were towing a three sailed ship to shore, but before they could make it, the sun came out and turned them to stone. Definitely worth a visit.

For a dramatic hollywood like mysterious beach, visit this one. The unique formations of the basalt columns which though slippery can be climbed on, the mystic cave, which is completely blocked during high tide remind me of those Famous five, Secret seven stories I read as a kid. Cool walking areas around this beach with geology alive at your every turn.

After going to Dryholaey first, we went out and around to get the view from this vantage point. They both are very scenic but this one has the sea stacks which are very unique and interesting. If you have the time, I would definitely visit both.

Since it's not part of the extremely popular tours closer to Reykjavik, not everyone gets to see this beautiful columnar basalt rock formations, rock spires in the Atlantic and beautiful black sand becahes. And that's a shame. Reykjavik Excursions stops here on their excellent South Shore Adventure tour, and you can easily stop here if you're driving around the Ring road. It's just west of Vik. It's a beautiful site that you just need to stop and take in for a while.

Nature has carved out a beautiful scene in Reynisdrangar, and the Icelanders have woven an excellent myth about the sea stacks / petrified trolls. Fantastic whether viewed from the west at Reynisfjara or at the beach in Vik - I would advise visiting both locales.
