I have always included interesting small hotels, B & B's, a riad in Fez, paradors, pensions and even a bell tower on the Camino de Compostella in my travels and now I can add my two nights stay at Tara Guest House. The Gallery Room (I fondly renamed the Princess Room) was brilliantly appointed from the four poster bed, the white leather Corbusier chaise, sophisticated and beautiful art work, the fire place, the large cane lounge and coffee table and the cleverly designed bathroom, which included a luxurious bath and resort decor. Brom and Julian were delightful hosts with a rare sense of hospitality, welcoming guests to a shared table of beautiful home cooked breakfasts, generous information on transport and other needs, local restaurants and galleries.
I am a musician and on commenting on the song of a bird in the early hours of the morning Brom instantly knew where I could identify the bird and notate it's melody. Wow.

If you are seeking an interesting, character filled, eclectic stay in a guest house with easy access to the city, restaurants galleries and concerts, and hosts with a unique gift for hospitality Tara is a must on your list of places not to be missed. Pauline E Sheehan

Room Tip: The Gallery Room is on the first floor, at the front of the house. If you enjoy open space, birds in the morning and a gracious style this is for you.

Staying at Tara was an unexpected pleasure, it has so much charm and character. The glowing reviews tell it all however it’s hard to describe how wonderful it is to stay there until you arrive. The magnificent breakfasts have been spoken about at great length and are even better than we expected. The beds are incredibly comfortable with beautiful Egyptian linen and the rooms (all with their own style) are immaculately clean, seriously large and very comfortable.

Julian & Brom take great delight in looking after their guests and genuinely enjoy their company which made our stay feel more like we were staying with friends. This was unlike any other B&B we’ve stayed in and made our visit to Sydney absolutely wonderful. We will be back next time we’re in Sydney thanks to our hosts and their delightful home. We highly recommend this to anyone who likes a stay that is warm, friendly and situated in a lovely community close to the city with very efficient public transport. You will not be disappointed if you chose to stay at Tara. Thanks Julian and Brom.

It is not straightforward to review Tara. It can be viewed as great by some and uncomfortable by others, depending on what you as a traveler look for in a place you stay. For me, on the positive side:

It is a beautiful house, restoration in progress. Interesting art on the walls
interesting furnishings, some a little worn.
the bed was comfortable, the linens very nice
interesting and very friendly hosts
extended home cooked breakfast.( and lunch combined), truly delicious
the host picks you up at the airport and takes you to the airport
there is Oscar, the dog, with disarming personality.

On the negative side
The worst:noise level. The house is on the corner of two busy (day and night) streets, it is also near the airport with flights curfew only from 11pm till 6 am - There is no soundproofing. We spent the first night unable to sleep, which took a day off enjoying our once a year 3 week vacation. The hosts provided us with earplugs and a fan which helped the next night.
There are insufficient shades on the windows
There is no air conditioning and it gets hot upstairs on a hot day
The distance from the center is great - it took us one hour to get to the Opera by bus. Train is faster, but you have to take a bus to the train and the wait for the train can be as long as 20-30 mins.
We shared a bathroom. Since the breakfast was at the same time for all, all need to use the bathroom in the morning at the same time. There is a bath tub in the shared bathroom, but I did not dare to take a bath as someone may need to use the toilet.
The room was not terrifically clean, but that is me, and many would not notice.
There was no place for your towel and only a small clothes rack for your clothes.
The price for a shared bathroom and all the inconveniences was high, even when one takes into account the magnificent breakfast, rides to the airport, the wonderful, hardworking hosts and the house.

We sincerely thank these guests for taking the time to write this review. While very grateful for the positive comments, we also note the less flattering ones - we have taken on board misgivings and will address concerns wherever possible.

After 3 years in operation, we have come to the conclusion that expectations are the most important issues that ultimately determine the enjoyment or otherwise of the accommodation experience. Surpass expectations and fine reviews will be forthcoming – disappoint and brickbats will be the order of the day!

Guests, like Inns and B and B’s come in all different shapes, sizes and types – the trick is to try and get the like minded together by matching the expectations, so that everyone is happy.

Most of our guests do enjoy what we have to offer and in most cases our website has been well read, thereby creating realistic expectations. It would seem, however, that our high ranking in TripAdvisor has possibly mislead some to believe that we might be more polished than we actually are.

Our venture into the wonderful world of inn keeping was inadvertent and due to a business reversal. We had initially purchased TARA with a view to slowly renovating and living in it. When circumstances changed, we were obliged to find a plan B or as it turned out, plan B and B!

As the house was not originally intended to be a commercial exercise, when buying it, we had not been concerned with what some see as disadvantages. The noise, for instance, is soon accepted by most as an inevitable consequence of being so close to the heart of the city and a reliable transport system – the convenience of having 400 odd restaurants, cafes and bars on our doorstep also mitigates to some extent for many.

We do have our drawbacks but sincerely feel that the benefits and charm of our location more than compensate. We can’t stop the planes or the traffic any more than we can stop the birds singing. We are not for everyone - given that we are all so different with our assorted priorities and preferences, no Inn can be.

Read all the reviews of all the places that appeal and ask questions. Take on board the criticism, the compliments and the balance. Let your research guide you to the option most likely to meet your expectations, thereby giving you the best chance to enjoy the satisfaction you deserve.

If you enjoy the company of fellow travellers and the pleasure of taking your time over an abundant breakfast with a wide range of lovely people, give us a go. We’re simply not a 5 star hotel or a low cost back packers joint – we’re probably somewhere in between!

My husband and I stayed at Tara following a 27 day cruise. We felt like we were in a mansion compared to our balcony stateroom on the cruise ship. Julian picked us up at the dock and we checked into the first-floor suite which has a bedroom and a sitting room. Brom and Julian were so welcoming! Brom's Sydney maps and help with transportation choices made all of our sightseeing so easy. The food.........well...........way beyond fabulous! We enjoyed the other guests, the lively conversation at breakfast and the terrific coffee! We feel so fortunate to have found the wonderful Tara Guest House!! I would recommend it for all travelers!!!

Room Tip: The first-floor room is HUGE!!

My wife Danielle & I recently got married here at the end of September and our entire stay there, our wedding, every meal, every laugh etc was due to in major part to our three wonderfull hosts....one of which hand four paws. Every couple has expectations of how and what they want thier wedding to be like, and Jullian and Bram & Oscar made those dreams come true and then some as well exceed expectations. A++++++ Looking forward to staying there again some day soon. 5 stars! Cheers.

Room Tip: Play with Oscar every morning with your post breaky Tea. If you need Bowtie help, Jullian is your man! Brom can out cook anyone, Fact.
