“Unusual Customer Service-Bright Lights-Tiny Pool”
Reviewed September 27, 2005

After noticing a good weekend rate for the new Courtyard in Schaumburg, we decided to spend a couple of nights there and do some shopping in the Chicago suburbs. Because it's new, we'll cut them some slack about the landscaping being sparse and there not being a sign along the street advising where to turn to get to the hotel (it's back in behind the Hawthorne Suites). We arrived around 4 pm; the parking lot was empty and we requested a room facing the back of the building on an upper floor. Because I wasn't feeling well, I wanted a decent night's sleep without the possibility of listening to any cars pulling up to the lobby door - besides we're Marriott Silver Elite members and we paid with a Marriott Visa so we thought we were entitled to at least that small request. Unfortunately, that request was met with a rolling of the eyes from the front desk clerk who proceeded to shuffle a couple of papers and, without comment about the room, handed my husband the key. Once we got to our room, we realized the clerk did not give us a room facing the back as requested and as we were grumbling to each other about that, we received a call from the aforementioned clerk who was checking to see if our room was satisfactory. My husband reminded her that we asked for a room facing the back and she replied, "Sorry about that" and never offered to move us.
Again - very few people staying there any of the 2 nights and 3 days we were there. We decided to drop it and just go out for an early dinner. Two hours later, we walked in the door and the exact same clerk asked if we were checking in! (I guess no one will be singing "Unforgettable" to us anytime soon.) The breakfast buffet was average Courtyard fare with eggs, sausage, potatoes, etc and was actually warm - which is sometimes not the case when occupancy is low and few people are eating there. The restaurant attendent who seated us seemed very nice but neglected to take our dishes as they piled up on our table. She only cleaned the tables of those who had already left. Besides the unusual customer service, the hotel is new so it's clean and the design is fairly contemporary but they went way overboard with the lighting. It's extremely bright in the lobby and hallways at night which really detracts from what could be a nice cozy ambiance - especially with the fireplace in the lobby. One last observation, the pool is the size of a postage stamp. If more than 4 people were in it at a time, you might feel as though you were invading someone's personal space. Although the rooms are nice - the king rooms featured a sofa sleeper, coffee maker and nice work spaces - if you want a weekend rate under $90 in Schaumburg and would like a decent sized pool, the SpringHill Suites would be a better bet.
