The Nest at Palisades Cabins
Reviewed July 26, 2013

My husband and I just had our second stay at The Nest, our first was our honeymoon. We were quite surprised from our first visit how secluded it actually felt. Maggie is just about the sweetest person and respects the clients privacy at all times. The cabin we stayed at was called The Starlight, it's very cozy and homey. We will be going back next year and hopefully each year after as well.

We were led to believe that all the cabins overlooked the Mississippi, per conversations and views of videos.
However..To our surprise...NO!.
On the up-side- The cabin was just perfect! Maggie n Al are the most when it comes to hosts! N Maggie is a 'watch-dog'! Your valuables r safe here, LOL!
The cabin was homey n relaxing.
Simply.."The Nest is the best!"
Thank You!

We do not purposely mislead anyone & have never said there are views of the River from the Cabins. The River is just down the Bluffs & a 5-min walk into the Park to the edge of the Bluffs that overlook the River. Main Street is parallel & next to the River & has several Docks.. There are many beautiful views, that we all live here with. Savanna & the entire area IS "on the River."

The cleanliness was great Service was super. And the area is great. Perfect for a Romantic getaway... You will love the atmosphere. The Cabin overlooks the Mississippi River witch makes for some great sunset viewing and wild life as well.

Happy Trails.

I had planned a surprise anniversary getaway for a long weekend for wife and I. Found this online with a well laid out website: http://www.thenestatpalisades.com/. I was in touch with Maggie, the owner of this adorable property they have developed over the years. She was punctual and prompt with her replies both email and regular mail (welcome packet and check-in info). We were very pleased with Maggie's kindness and information of the area. We had been to the state park and Galena area several times before, but she recommended many new places, routes (short-cuts) restaurants and experiences that we've never known before. The Hillside restaurant was a nice German place, a 15 minute drive over the bridge into Iowa that we enjoyed very much.

The 3 similar cabins are nicely tucked away in a secluded and private on a quaint, charming piece of land up on a hill in northwestern illinois. Ours was the Starlight cabin, perfectly sized for two and well equipped. The pillow top bed was very comfortable, with a down comforter and comfortable sheets & pillows! Was able to watch a few dvd's and there was satellite HD tv. Oooo the jacuzzi hot tub was just heaven and thoroughly enjoyed everyday, never got tired of that luxury! There were just a few concerns that we mentioned to Maggie: The interior lighting in our cabin was poor which made it difficult to read anything well. There were a few cute rustic-Tiffany style lights that emitted nice cozy and romantic feel, just throughout very dim and could have used some additional brighter lights, maybe some additional "track lights" above with dimmers. The fan in the bathroom did not work and there was a small amount of mold on the bottom of the shower door, and the place could use a more thorough cleaning. All things very easily fixed and understandable things do break from time to time. Aside from those small issues, we plan on coming back many times in the future! Thank you Maggie for creating this cozy & charming oasis from our day to day busyness of life!

My wife and I wanted to have a quiet and restful vacation near the Palisades State Park. We both enjoy nature but like to have a comfortable and clean place to stay. The description of these cabins on the web sounded ideal, so I reserved one for 5 nights. We were very disappointed. The cabins are secluded and private, but by no means quiet, clean and comfortable. I know that everyone’s experience is subjective, and many people have enjoyed staying at these cabins. However, I think that anyone considering staying there should be aware of the following facts:
all trains passing through Savanna during the night are required to sound their horns many, many times. There are many trains throughout the night, and the sound is clearly heard in the cabins.
the cabins and everything in them are dated. The refrigerator in our cabin was extremely noisy.
the hot tub is not only another source of noise, but also fills the cabin with the smell of chlorine.
the lighting in our cabin was poor, the fan in the bathroom did not work, there was mould on the bottom of the shower door, and the place needed a good cleaning.
We only stayed two nights and left. The owner did compromise with us, and agreed to charge us for three nights instead of the full 5 nights..

These Guests first reserved in August. Called, moved their dates to September. August was too hot for them to hike in the Park. It was hot, altho the Cabins are wonderfully airconditioned. They came in September. Rainy & below normal temps out. Too cold out they said. Cabin was extremely clean & certainly warm...That fireplace will heat ya out if you are not careful, LOL... Trains way down the Bluffs, off in the distance. Refrigerator very quiet. Yes, the hottub comes off & on to filter & maintain temperature. Bathdoor can be closed or Tub turned off ! Hello?? Mould? Noooo, Dean comes to recaulk several times a year...2 small spots at bottom of that shower to recaulk.
This was simply a matter of porridge too hot & porridge too cold...Too hot for them in August & too cold for them in September. These Guests were not charged to move their dates, altho they called to move the dates a week before they were to arrive...And were DISSAPPOINTED the 3rd morning after arriving in September. Yes, the 3rd morning of a 5day stay. He actually said, "Well, I'm sure you get your money on Weekends..Thererfore, you should not charge us the rest of the money."
I had turned down 5bookings for their Cabin. I showed him that.
It was fine with me, they left. Yes, I did compromise. Was better.
Porridge too hot, Porridge too cold. Not fair.

Maggie and Al, we love you and we love the wonderful place you've created. This was our 4th stay at the nest and each time we feel welcomed and appreciated. We ALWAYS ride our motorcycles when staying at the nest, so I'm not really sure what reviewer SkupieCD is talking about. Our experience is that the owners are always polite to all guests who select the Nest as their place of refuge.

For my wife and I, this is our romantic "leave the world behind" spot. During the day we ride The Great River Road, go on picnics in the many places along the way or just stop in to whatever looks good. When we get back from a day of adventure, the hot tub in the cabin soothes our tired muscles, while the abiance soothes our souls. We'll grill steaks on the porch and watch old movies on the satellite TV. We have NEVER had a bad experience at The Nest and we gush our praises to anyone who is thinking of heading that way. Can we give it 10 stars?
