I have stayed in lots of B and Bs and generally prefer them to hotels the problem is you never really know what you are going to get; some are fantastic some average and some are dire, this one falls into the last category. The accommodation is in a building separated from the pub (which is in fact not a pub) It is a poorly lit, dingy, badly decorated, slightly smelly, depressing place. The bedroom was not very clean though the en-suite was ok. The bed was very uncomfortable with a worn mattress, springs pinging with every movement. The room was cold and there was a lot of noise from guests in room below. Talking about fellow guests; the room on the ground floor next to the main entrance was occupied by a couple that seemed to have their door permanently open presumably for ventilation!
Breakfast in the morning was a grim experience tasting of rancid fat (I am not fussy and will eat almost anything) How on earth people recommend this place is beyond me (It is not even that cheap) I cannot comment on the restaurant as after the breakfast experience did not want to risk it.

Room Tip: sleep in your car in preference to this place

Arrived to a brightly lit bar area with nowhere comfortable to sit. All tables laid up for dining but no one dining! Overpriced drinks.
Showed to our room which looked like your granny's. Probably not decorated since the 70's. It was cold. The bed was uncomfortable with springs pinging and boinging at every movement. The carpet was filthy! !!!! Had not been hoovered for goodness knows how long. The room smelled of rancid chip fat. The landlady resided in the room opposite. She had her television blaring loud which resulted in me having to knock on her door to turn it down at 23.45. I couldn't face staying there a minute longer than I had to and left swiftly the following morning without staying for breakfast. The whole decor was dated and eery and literally made my skin creep.Big .mistake, never again!!

I came here for just one night with my mum after visiting my sick grandpa. On arrival we indicated that we wanted some space with a glass of wine to just chat quietly between eachother. The pub was brightly lit, loud and the drinks were ridiculously overpriced at £9.90 for just two small glasses from bottles. The room was AWFUL. Filthy carpet, mattresses that hurt your back with the springs very visible, the decor, completely mismatched and provided a very uncomfortable atmosphere. What we were most shocked at was at almost MIDNIGHT we were kept awake by the extreme loudness of the OWNERS television from the room opposite. We skipped breakfast and left the next day as soon as we could. Extremely overpriced. WILL NOT RECOMMEND!

Great pub B&B close enough to Oxford, with a car, that caters for the locals and travellers alike. Fantastic selection of bottles real ales and a genuine hospitality on offer. The accommodation is a bit dated and higildy pigildy, it does remind you of the spare room at an elder relative, but it is sufficient for an overnight stop and good value. Breakfast is good although there isn't a selection on offer just an English, or any component of it, prepared how you like. There are many stories to hear and you are attended too so for the money it is great.

I didn't stay at the hotel however I was with a group having dinner in the Function Room at England's Rose after doing a long lovely hike in the area. Before this we had drinks on various days in the bar. It is a homely, fun and querky place with a real fire and friendly bar staff. The staff did their best to make us welcome. The food was good home style cooking and although the service was a bit slow (the food didn't come out all together) I found it very enjoyable. If you like a relaxed, homely style welcoming meal you will like this bar and restaurant.
