We had been planning a trip to this place ever since it had the refurb a couple of years back. We had been shown some of the rooms when we happened upon the place for lunch in 2011. Sadly our room (room 5 I think) was not quite what we were expecting. Having seen the large room 1 we were disappointed with a room just big enough for the bed! It was a lovely comfy bed and peaceful and we did get a very good nights sleep. The toilet was also a bit dirty, you could see limescale under the rim which wasn't brilliant!
We did book the last room available at short notice for one night only in the Easter Holidays so I suppose we couldn't expect the best room and perhaps they had been in a rush to get it ready but still I felt a teeny bit let down.
Also the reception wasn't that welcoming, it wasn't the same friendly man who had shown us around back when we first came and I felt like we were a bit of an inconvenience checking in at 6.30pm!
I did really enjoy the food and I am going to do a seperate review of the restaurant but at this point I am not sure i would want to stay again!

I am very sorry that you were let down by your visit, it is very disappointing to read. Room 5 is one of our smaller rooms, and yes you were right we had been fully booked for other rooms for quite some time leading up to Easter. However, the room should have been clean, I have passed your comments onto our head housekeeper, it is quite a shock to receive a negative comment on the cleanliness of the hotel as our standards are very high and the reviews reflect this. We had a meeting with the senior staff and we all spoke about your review and the poor welcome you received on arrival, in essence it is our fault for not having enough staff available to welcome you properly, this is a situation which we hope to have rectified now and will not be repeated. I hope that you do decide to visit us again, please call us and let us know what happened on your last visit and we will certainly book you into Room 1, as that is the room you liked so much. Thank you for leaving a review, we cant always get it right and we need to know about it so we can improve for the next time.

This inn was a lovely combination of rustic charm downstairs, but all mod cons upstairs in the bedroom, which was warm and comfortable and had a very big and comfy bed. It was a real benefit that we could control the heating ourselves in our room, so didn't need to wear thermal pyjamas to bed as we have done in some other places! The food was mostly good, particularly the breakfast which was excellent. Staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. The location is really peaceful and it was a very nice scenic walk down to the ferry for Bowness, which meant we didn't need to use the car at all. We enjoyed our stay and would certainly stay here again.

One place we wanted to visit in the Lake District was Beatrix Potter's farm. We found Cuckoo Brow Inn on the internet and chose it for its proximity to Hill Top Farm. What a good choice! Modernised, comfortable rooms in an old historical inn with a super pub and excellent cuisine. The staff were very knowledgeable and couldn't have been friendlier. We liked the sign outside that stated "Muddy boots, wet dogs and children welcome"! We didn't see any children as it wasn't school holidays, but there were lots of hikers with muddy boots and several well behaved dogs, and all were welcomed as sincerely as any other guest. We approached Far Sawrey using the ferry across Windermere from Bowness - much easier that driving the narrow lanes. The Lake District is always busy and often wet, but well worth it at least once.

Fantastic hotel, beautiful rooms, friendly staff and excellent food can't go wrong a little expensive though and the rooms could do with more plug sockets as we could only find the one for the kettle :-D

having read the reviews we were expecting to be wowed.

The reception on arrival was a bit disappointing. We had a nice room with large king size bed and en-suite. the food is locally sourced, and a reasonable choice on the menu. The location is lovely with a easy walk to Beatrix Potters home at Near Sawry, and within easy access of the ferry across Lake Windermere. There are good walks nearby, children and dogs are welcome. Not so sure about dogs in bedrooms as next door one dog barked constantly when we went to bed

Overall we felt accommodation at this pub was overpriced.

Thank you for your review, I am very disappointed to read that you felt let down on your visit to us. As you say we always receive 5 stars and glowing reviews, so to read that you were not so impressed with us is perhaps a good motivation to our team, it allows them to see how disappointing it is for our guests when we have not given our very best service. I have passed your review around all the staff, they have all taken on board your note about the welcome at reception; first impressions count and we obviously failed you here. I am sorry that the dog next door barked, we would certainly have had a quiet word with the owners of the dog if we had been aware, we do welcome dogs but we also require owners to be courteous of other guests in the building, 99.9% of the time we have no problems. I hope that you will give us another chance, Sawrey is a beautiful place to visit – especially when the sun shines!
