“Good Food, Terrible Service”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

Two of us decided that this would be a quick, easy dinner location since we were staying in the Embassy Suites, I had the Sea Bass which was very good and arrived quickly. After that, the service went steadily downhill. We had to ask repeatedly for water refills and for coffee. It took over 20 minutes for our dessert to arrive (just ice cream!). The coffee was cold. There was plenty of wait staff sitting around but none of them wanted to help. If you tried to flag one of them down, they pointed to someone else. When we asked why the service was so slow, we were told that is was because there was a banquet being served. The food was also very expensive. I do not think the average family could afford to feed the whole group with these prices. Over all, the experience was average with the food being good and the service being poor to non-existent.

“Adequate but Pricey”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

On a quick business trip to the Embassy Suites Hotel by O'Hare I ate here twice, mostly since it was in the hotel and I could room charge the bill to make it easy to expense the tab. Lunch was a Chinese Chicken Salad, average but about 30% too expensive for what it was. Dinner the next night was a filet mignon, well prepared but on a bed of soggy veggies and pasty mashed potatoes, for nearly $30. Certainly not a place to seek out if you were not staying at the hotel as there are many other choices nearby. Service was attentive and quite good, just the food itself didn't live up to even average expectations especially at the prices asked.

“Fine hotel restaurant”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

Dined here on a recent business trip. First, the price range listed is incorrect. The most expensive entree I recall was in the low-mid $20's. Without alcohol you can walk out of here for under $40 easy. Again, to echo many other seasoned travelers, Basil's is an average-slight above average hotel restaurant. This is a good thing. The food is Mediterranean inspired, but the complex flavors they try to create are a bit pedestrian. Not bad food by any means, just don't get fooled by reviews touting this place as a Chicago destination.

I had the bean soup, which was flavorful, warm and a bit zesty. The bar menu offers 8" flatbread pizzas, which I had the kalamata olive/tomato one. The dough was well done, but the fresh toppings were drowned out by the abundant mozzarella. The tiramisu is homemade, according to my server, and was quite good.

If you are staying in the hotel or within walking distance, do try for a convenient meal or a change of pace from whatever is offered in your hotel.
