“Loved it, will be back”
Reviewed May 13, 2009

Was here in early May for a weekend break. Found the staff to be most courteous. Went into Waterford on the Saturday night and loved the fact that the cab driver was able to talk about the hotel and mentioned the night manager by name, saying how nice she was and that she would look after us when we came back from the club. Very comfy beds, loved the pool, the bar had what we needed, food was divine. Cannot say anything bad about the hotel except that it is far from town which might be a problem for some people and also that they could do with more staff, the ones that were working, I have a sneaking suspision that they're working seven day weeks, I know it's a recession but really, give them a break!!

just back from a 2 day stay at faithlegg, and am very dissappointed. Rooms for a 4 star are well below average, more like a motel room, no valances on the beds so you can see the bed base(just gives a feeling of uncleanliness), rooms are tiny with paperthin walls, you can hear conversations next door, snoring, tvs, toilets flushing etc.
Breakfast was like faulty towers, staff were very streched, waited 10 minutes for bowls, plates. dinner on the other hand was pleasant, with efficient staff.
the hotel had functions both nights which added to the noise in the hotel, and the bedrooms are right beside the function room, so you can hear the thumping of music.
a beautiful golf course however and the only draw to the hotel

Just back from 3 nights in Faithlegg and was apprehensive on journey there due to mixed and unfavourable reviews of the hotel. Weather was beautiful and Faithlegg looks wonderful as you drive through the gates, past the golf course and up to the front door.
Check-in was the quickest I've ever experienced due to no chit-chat, just here's your key and go. No eye-contact whatsoever! I expected a little more from the rooms, maybe more space, but having said that they were spotless and housekeeping over the days was faultless. Our first night was very peaceful, we realised the second night that the neighbouring room must've been empty on night one, by day two we knew all about the neighbours activities! The walls must be paper thin!!
We had a meal there on the second night and this was lovely, compliments to the chef, Jenny May. It was first class. I think our foreign hospitality workers could teach us a thing or two about service, it was all european staff who had the bit of banter with us.
I think hotels like these have to remember that return visitors are even more important than first-timers, we spend more money and recommend their hotel to others.
It'sa pity there isn't a marked walking route around the grounds, really only caters for golfers and I'm not one of those. By the way, you really need a car and if you can, a designated driver, if you are to imbibe in any of the local pubs.

Having read the very mixed reviews for this place prior to staying and now having had time to reflect on the experience, I think I've found the challenge for the ownership in making this place great.

Faithlegg is a beautifully situated architectural gem and it has all the necessary tick marks for golf, spa, sauna, swimming pool etc. Bedrooms are adequate and reception/bar/dining areas are fine. Food is OK, if uninspiring. All in all, these components should make for a satisfactory visit.

However, the owners need to do something about the pervasive surliness of some of the staff, particularly at the front desk. It's just not good enough to give monosyllabic unhelpful responses to guest questions. It's just not acceptable to get a shrug of the shoulders when the pro-shop is not open half an hour after you've been told it would. And it's completely offensive when hotel staff actively try to avoid talking to guests. This didn't just happen to me, I sat in the lobby observing these behaviors for an hour. In case anyone thinks that's a bit weird, I would add that I'm a hospitality and foodservice consultant who makes a living out of similar observations elsewhere. It's simply amazing how the behavior of the staff can alter one's experience, no matter how good the setting.

When behavior like this is endemic in a hotel environment, clearly what's missing is good leadership. There was no senior management visibility whatsoever, no senior management evidently welcoming/greeting or interacting with guests. This is a country house hotel where the essence of the offering is supposed to be warmth and personal attention.

So, sorry, Faithlegg....you guys have a great place with great potential but you need to carry out some serious management and employee coaching to get to thye next level.

Hi, We went here in Feb for a relaxing break, looking for a hotel with some grounds and nice walks. This looked like it fitted the bill, but the grounds are just a golf course with loads of "Golfers Only" signs, so the only walks are a drive away or on the local roads with no paths. The old part of the hotels is nice and relaxing for a drink and a chat, the new part with most of the rooms is like any other hotel. The only problem I had with the room is that there is no sound proofing at all, you can hear everything from toilets to moans so your sleep patterns will definitely depend on others. There are a couple of pubs/restaurants (Jack Meade's Pub, and in Cheakpoint) within about 2 mile so no need to head into Waterford but you will need to drive to them. The food was fine but do not sit in the conservatory part of the restaurant as it can be quite cold (time of year dependant) also busy as the kitchen doors are there and they tend to come out and sort out trays before going to the tables, the other parts of the restaurant are nice, had no problems with any staff. All in all I wouldn't go back unless I was golfing.

We stayed at this hotel for a family celebration (my uncle's 50th birthday) & were thoroughly disappointed.

Positives: The original house has a lot of charm (check out the reading room!). The one evening meal we had there was delicious & the waiter that served us was excellent.

Negatives: The biggest negative was the lack of hot water. We stayed there on a Friday & Saturday night. I got up on Saturday morning after a long journey from the UK the night before in desperate need of a hot shower to revitalise me but the water was stone cold even though we let it run for 10 mins. We decided to go down for breakfast & ask at reception hoping they would solve the problem before we returned to out rooms. When we spoke to the lady on reception she informed us that several people were having problems & they weren't expecting so many people to need showers that morning! What? Surely, as a 4-star hotel you should be able to provide enough hot water for everyone to have a morning shower? Disgraceful! The "hot" breakfast was cold & after 15 mins of waiting I had to ask a waitress to bring us tea & coffee. At that stage I had nearly finished my breakfast! I am used to being asked the minute I sit down at a table whether I would like tea or coffee. Maybe I was a little grumpy after the shower debacle! We checked at reception on the way back to our room & were assured that the water had been boosted & we would have hot water imminently. We kept checking the water but did not have any hot water until 4 pm that day. So, we had to go a whole day without a shower. I even checked the showers in the spa area but the water was cold there too. Everyone in our party had the same problem. Other negatives: breakfast was cold again the following morning but at least we had hot water! Our room was very grubby & in desperate need of updating. It was well below par for the price. Drinks at the bar were pricey & the service was ok, not brilliant, except for the one waiter who served us our evening meal that night.

All in all, more 2 or 3-star than 4-star & we won't be returning!

Just back from a weeks stay in a two bedroomed self catering mews at faithlegg.
The house was a definite four star facility with all mod cons.
The pool and food in the golf club was excellent and very child friendly.
The staff always pleasant and would definately go back again, as its near lovely scenic drives and near waterford city.
