Fun atmosphere and authentic Bavairian style food and beir! Owners make you feel at home and often provide music while you dine. The beir garden is a 3 season siting area that add to your experience! Home made sausages and rueben sandwiches that are DELICIOUS!!!!!

“Not impressed anymore”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

What has happened here? We now have had 2 bad dining experiences in a row. This used to be one of our favorites for Friday night fish but we are think we may be done here.

Overpriced it is, but we still were frequent diners here, mostly in the summer on the outside patio. During their Octoberfest (which obviously lasts for a few weeks) they were overwhelmed with the crowd. Service was poor at best and the server couldn't even answer the most basic questions that our guest asked. Not off to a good start. The soup was completely void of taste. We usually don't comment much on bad food but this time we did and it was met with "yea, I know"! Seriously? We all ordered the friday night special, all you can eat deep fried cod. It delivered cold! OK, maybe the next order??? NOT! All out! No more fish available. Again, seriously? We sat there waiting to ask the waitress for more fish (because the first was inedible) but she never came back. Subsequently we asked another waitress who said she would get ours to us. Finally a different waitress came and told us that they were all out so we were basically done!!

OK, decided to give it one more try at the request of a relative that was in town. Made a reservation. Got there on time and were told the table was ready. Started to head to the downstairs area when the owner stopped us with a scowling look and told us to wait at the top of the stairs. We did, and wait some more, wait some more. The owner never came back but the original waitress that told us to head downstairs came back with a puzzled look wondering why we were still standing there. When we told her that the owner told us to wait, she just laughed and shook her head.

We were seated, but it took awhile for our actual waitress to come to our table. Beer prices are steep. Food is overpriced. Was the meal bad? Not this time, it was pretty good but not a great value considering what you pay. It is sad to see the down turn of this long time favorite. It just seems like they are trying to milk it for everything they can and you are getting taken for a bit of a ride. Sorry. Attitude can make or break a place.

“So Disappointing!”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

We ate here on a Friday night, and they were moderately busy, but not full.

The waitress was slow to take our order because "two large groups came in at the same time." She pointed to two long tables with 7 or 8 people at each one. Considering that there were a number of empty tables (we were downstairs), she should have been able to manage.

First disappointment: they were out of sauerbraten, my favorite German dish. At SIX PM! Seriously????? they can't make much of it if they run out so early.

Second disappointment: My backup choice, wiener schnitzel, was dry and tasteless. There were two pieces of veal. The breading (only flour, no breadcrumbs) was very dark on one piece and light on the other. So I don't think they were cooked at the same time. They looked nothing like the photo on the menu page of the website. And there was no lemon, which is usually served with this dish (and is in the photo on the website). It's an easy dish to make, there's no excuse for it being so bad.

Third disappointment: the "freshly made" vegetables due jour were inedible. They were definitely NOT fresh. They were the sort of frozen mix of carrot slices and chunks of broccoli and cauliflower that you can buy in any supermarket. They had either been boiled for an hour or held on a steam table since lunch. They were mushy and tasted horrible.

On the plus side, my husband's bratwurst was good, the Lyonnaise potatoes (home fries under another name) were good, and the beer was good.

The cellar is supposed to be atmospheric, but we had a good view of the kitchen and the waitresses picking up their orders, which takes away from the "atmosphere."

“Es ist nicht gut!”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

Maybe because it is their Octoberfest, but it is no excuse. This restaurant was recommended by an acquaintance. We arrived about 6:30 and there was no one in the bad or restaurant. After waiting about 10 minutes someone came in from outside and apologized for the wait. We were seated and she asked if we wanted to order something to drink - we hadn't even seen the drink menu so we said we would wait, she said she would be back shortly. 15 - 20 minutes later she showed up to take our drink orders. Then another 15 - 20 minutes passed before another server showed up to take our food orders. Since we were ordering dinners the soup/salad/bread was included. I ordered the "beef spatzele" soup and my wife the simple side salad. The side salad was fine, nothing special, just some lettuce and a few bits of tomato and cuke; the soup was an extreme disappointment. A very salty somewhat beef flavored broth with some slimy bits on the bottom - I know what a spatzele soup should be and this was as far from that as could be imagined. For our main course my wife ordered the single sausage plate with red cabbage and "German" potato salad; I opted for the butterly pork ribs with the veggies and red cabbage. We had to wait another 20+ minutes for the food to be served - which usually is not a problem if the food is good and well prepared. So here is the description: the good - the brat my wife ordered was very good; the bad - the "ribs" turned out to be two huge fatty pork shoulders with almost no flavor, the only thing I can say is that it was so much food, no one could have eaten it; the ugly - the potato salad was possibly the worst potato salad we have ever seen - chunks of potato floating is some kind of liquid, the veggies were frozen mixed veggies that had been kept in a steamer until they were limp and tasteless, and the red cabbage was chunks of red cabbage that needed to be carved to eat. And, also they got our order mixed up (there were a total of 7 people in the restaurant at the time).

I ended up giving one of the portions of pork shoulder (these were no way ribs) to a table of college students sitting near us - ever they said it was more food than they could eat. The veggies and potato salad were inedible. A couple sitting at another table returned their food as it was cold when served. The pork shoulder was OK, but, as I said, had very little flavor.

Just so you don't think we are picky eaters, we have had bad dining experiences before, but this was really one of the worst. It may be the timing was bad, I can only hope so. We have traveled throughout Germany and have eaten at other German restaurants in the U.S., but this was by far the worst.

Bottom Line: If you really want to try some German food, give it a try - the sausages were good, but my wife makes German potato salad that puts theirs to shame, same with red cabbage - I have had far better out of a jar. As far as we are concerned, there are a lot of good restaurants in the Rockford area, skip this one.

“One of our favorite places”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

We have been eating at Der Rathskellar for 33 years, and love it. Dress is casual. Friday and Saturday nights prepare to wait at the bar if you want a seat downstairs. The lower level has the atmosphere we love. Most weekends there is an accordion player wandering the establishment. When we have a large group and the weather permits, we enjoy the outdoor Biergarten. Also, we are welcome to bring our dogs when we eat in the Biergarten, which is a treat. Owner Mike Dupre has a great selection of imported German beer. The entire menu is five star. The Lyonnaise Potatoes are superb. Their home-brand sausage selection rivals Usingers, which is also, offered. We have never been disappointed.
